31st Yukon Legislative Assembly
The 31st Yukon Legislative Assembly convened in 2002, after the victory of the Yukon Party led by Dennis Fentie in the 2002 Yukon general election. The Yukon Party formed the territorial government, Dennis Fentie became the premier, and Ted Staffen became the speaker. Yukon Party
The Yukon Party, formerly the Yukon Progressive Conservative Party, is a conservative political party in Yukon, Canada. History The Yukon Progressive Conservative Party was founded in April 1978. Long time Yukon legislator Hilda Watson was elected as the party's first leader defeating Yukon MP Erik Nielsen by one vote. Watson had been a member of the territorial Legislative Council since 1970, and became the first woman in Canadian history to lead a political party into a general election. However, she was unable to win a seat in the 1978 election, and consequently resigned. Chris Pearson then became the leader of the party and was able to get a position in the government. The Progressive Conservatives were defeated in the 1985 election by the Yukon New Democratic Party (NDP) led by Tony Penikett. John Edzerza
John Edzerza (August 14, 1948 – November 25, 2011) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of McIntyre-Takhini in the Yukon Legislative Assembly. Political career Born in British Columbia in 1948, he first entered politics in 2002 as a Yukon Party MLA, and served as Minister of Justice and Minister of Education in Dennis Fentie's cabinet. After disagreeing with a number of government decisions in early 2006, he resigned from the Yukon Party on August 2, 2006, to sit as an independent MLA, and recontested his seat in that fall's territorial election as a candidate of the Yukon New Democratic Party. He was re-elected, and served in the NDP caucus under Todd Hardy until January 2009, when he resigned from the NDP to sit again as an independent. He rejoined the Yukon Party on October 22, 2009, and served as Minister of the Environment until retiring in 2011. Edzerza died of leukemia on November 25, 2011. Riverdale North
Riverdale North is an electoral district which elects a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of the Yukon Territory in Canada. Along with Riverdale South, it makes up the subdivision of Whitehorse of Riverdale. The district also includes the residents of Long Lake Road. Ted Staffen
Ted Staffen is a Canadian politician, who represented the electoral district of Riverdale North in the Yukon Legislative Assembly as a member of the Yukon Party from 2002 to 2011. He served as the 9th Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 2003 to 2011. Early life Staffen holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Simon Fraser University, where he studied the political evolution of the Yukon. Staffen has worked in the private sector as an entrepreneur, a natural resources consultant, and in risk capital. He also served on the Board of the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce. Porter Creek South
Porter Creek South is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of Yukon, Canada. It comprises part of the Whitehorse subdivision of Porter Creek and is the smallest riding in Whitehorse. It is bordered by the ridings of Porter Creek Centre, Porter Creek North, and Takhini-Kopper King. Porter Creek South is also the former seat of Pat Duncan, 6th Premier of the Yukon, who served from 2000 to 2002. Pat Duncan
Patricia Jane Duncan (born April 8, 1960) is a Canadian politician from Yukon. Duncan served as leader of the Yukon Liberal Party from 1998 to 2005 and as the sixth premier of Yukon from 2000 until 2002. Duncan was the first Liberal premier of the Yukon and the first female premier in the Yukon, the second woman in Canadian history to win the premiership of a province or territory through a general election, the first to do so by defeating an incumbent premier, and the first to do so by defeating a male opponent. Porter Creek North is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of Yukon, Canada. It contains part of the Whitehorse subdivision of Porter Creek, as well as the subdivisions of Crestview and Kulan. Jim Kenyon
Jim Kenyon is a Canadian politician, who represented the electoral district of Porter Creek North in the Yukon Legislative Assembly from 2002 to 2011. He is a member of the Yukon Party. Kenyon was a candidate for the leadership of the Yukon Party in 2011, following the resignation of Dennis Fentie, but lost to Darrell Pasloski. Archibald Donald Lang (April 3, 1948 – March 11, 2021) was a Canadian politician, who represented the electoral district of Porter Creek Centre in the Yukon Legislative Assembly from 2002 to 2011. Pelly-Nisutlin is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of the Yukon Territory in Canada. It was created in 2002 out of the districts of Faro and Ross River-Southern Lakes. The riding includes the communities of Teslin, Faro, Ross River, Little Salmon, and Johnsons Crossing. Dean Hassard is a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Pelly-Nisutlin in the Yukon Legislative Assembly as a member of the Yukon Party from 2002 to 2006. Hassard ran for the Yukon Party in the newly created riding of Pelly-Nisutlin in the snap election of 2002. Hassard ran against Liberal Jim McLachlan, the former Mayor of Faro and the incumbent MLA for Faro. McLachlan's riding had been dissolved to form part of Pelly-Nisutlin.
