2nd Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry
The 2nd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was also known as 2nd East Tennessee Cavalry. Service The 2nd Tennessee Cavalry was organized July through November 1862 in eastern Tennessee and mustered in for a three year enlistment under the command of Colonel Daniel M. Ray. Subordinate officers included Lieutenant Colonel William R. Cook, and majors George W. Hutsell, Charles Inman, William R. Macbeth, and William F. Prosser. The unit was composed primarily of Southern loyalists from the Tennessee counties of Knox, Sevier and Blount. Notably, among the enlisted were two women pretending to be men: Frances Elizabeth Quinn and Sarah Bradbury. The regiment's original muster rolls were destroyed at Nolensville, Tennessee on December 30, 1862. The regiment re-mustered at Murfreesboro, Tennessee on January 26, 1863. The American Civil War made a huge impact on Tennessee, with large armies constantly destroying its rich farmland, and every county witnessing combat. It was a divided state, with the Eastern counties harboring pro- Union sentiment throughout the conflict, and it was the last state to officially secede from the Union, in protest of President Lincoln's April 15 Proclamation calling forth 75,000 members of state militias to suppress the rebellion. The XVI Army Corps was a corps of the Union Army during the American Civil War. The corps rarely fought as one unified unit, as its divisions were often scattered across the country. History Creation and Vicksburg The XVI Corps was organized on December 18, 1862 with Maj. Gen. Stephen A. Hurlbut in command. It had four divisions commanded respectively by William Sooy Smith (1st Division), Grenville Dodge (2nd Division), Nathan Kimball (3rd Division) and Jacob G. Lauman (4th Division). The Department of the Ohio was an administrative military district created by the United States War Department early in the American Civil War to administer the troops in the Northern states near the Ohio River. 1st Department 1861–1862 General Orders No. 14, issued by the Adjutant General's Office in Washington, D.C., on May 3, 1861, combined all Federal troops in the states of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois in a new military department called the Department of the Ohio, with headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Army of the Ohio was the name of two Union armies in the American Civil War. The first army became the Army of the Cumberland and the second army was created in 1863. History 1st Army of the Ohio General Orders No. 97 appointed Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell to command the Department of the Ohio.
