2nd Jerusalem Biennale (2015)
Jerusalem Biennale, The Jerusalem Biennale, as stated on the Biennial Foundation's website, "is a platform for professional curators and artists to present contemporary works that relate, in one way or another, to the Jewish world of content. Every two years, a growing community of artists, art lovers, collectors, writers, researchers, and social activists gather in Jerusalem to celebrate Contemporary Jewish Art and to enjoy a variety of exhibitions, projects, site-specific installations and events under this conceptual framework." The second Jerusalem Biennale, titled "Present Work," was held on 24 September to 5 November 2015. More than 200 artists participated in the Biennale, including Motti Mizrachi, Sigalit Landau, Andi Arnovitz, Pablo Lobato, and Maya Zack. Jerusalem (; he, יְרוּשָׁלַיִם ; ar, القُدس ) (combining the Biblical and common usage Arabic names); grc, Ἱερουσαλήμ/Ἰεροσόλυμα, Hierousalḗm/Hierosóluma; hy, Երուսաղեմ, Erusałēm. is a city in Western Asia. Situated on a plateau in the Judaean Mountains between the Mediterranean Sea, Mediterranean and the Dead Sea, it is one of the List of oldest continuously inhabited cities, oldest cities in the world and is considered to be a holy city for the three major Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Jerusalem Biennale
The Jerusalem Biennale is a contemporary art event which has taken place biannually since 2013. Exhibits are held in different historical and modern locations around Jerusalem, with a focus on where the contemporary art world and the Jewish world of content intersect. The Biennale is a stage for professional artists whose work references Jewish thought, spirit, tradition or experience, to exhibit their work in Jerusalem. The Jerusalem Biennale is a member of thBiennial Foundation together with more than a 100 Biennales from around the world. Motti Mizrachi
Mordechai (Motti) Mizrachi ( he, מוטי מזרחי, born 1946) is an Israeli multimedia artist who creates politically engaged conceptual works that combine sculpture, video, photography, public art and performance. ''Dough'', ''Via Dolorosa'' (1973) and ''Healing'' (1980) marked the emergence of avant-garde Israeli performance and video art. Since the 1980s, he has created numerous site specific public sculptures. Biography Disabled since childhood, Motti Mizrachi uses humor and self-irony in his work, with an emphasis on the flaws and pleasures of the human body, while examining the oppression and control of the strong over the weak, both socially and politically. In 1969-1973, he studied at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. Sigalit Landau
Sigalit Ethel Landau ( he, סיגלית לנדאו; born 1969) is an Israeli sculptor, video and installation artist. Biography Sigalit Ethel Landau was born in 1969 in Jerusalem. She spent several years in the US and the UK. Between 1990 and 1995, she studied art at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. During this time, she spent one-semester as an exchange student at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. She currently lives and works in Israel. Art career Landau is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work includes drawing, sculpture, video and performance art, sometimes self-standing and sometimes forming whole environments. Andi LaVine Arnovitz (born 1959) is an American-Israeli printmaker and multimedia artist. Work Arnovitz is an activist/feminist artist who works in a variety of media. Her primary source of inspiration is paper, she considers herself a paper-manipulator, a bookmaker and an assemblage artist. Her pieces often reflect her affinity for pattern, surface, and thread, a passion she developed as a child wandering through her father’s fabric store in Kansas City. Her focus is the flashpoint where gender, politics and religion meet. Of great concern to her are primary issues surrounding the differences between Jews and Arabs, between religious and non-religious, between Jewish law and contemporary society, between men and women, between young and old. Maya Zack
Maya Zack ( he, מאיה ז"ק; born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1976) is an artist-filmmaker who creates video art and installations. Biography Maya Zack studied at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem.
