Washington Lafayette Elliott
Washington Lafayette Elliott (March 31, 1825 – June 29, 1888) was a brigadier general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He led a division of IV Corps at the Battle of Nashville in 1864. In 1866, he was awarded the honorary grade of brevet major general, U.S. Army. Early life and career Elliott was born on March 31, 1825, at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in the United States. He was a son of U.S. Navy Commodore Jesse Elliott. Washington accompanied his father on some voyages. After attending Dickinson College, he entered the United States Military Academy on July 1, 1841. He left in 1844 to study medicine, but was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1846 for the Mexican–American War. Iowa In The American Civil War
The state of Iowa played a significant role during the American Civil War in providing food, supplies, troops and officers for the Union army. Prelude to war Iowa had become the 29th state in the Union on December 28, 1846. Settlers had defeated the Sauk, Meskwaki, and Ho-Chunk during the 1832 Black Hawk War, resulting in lopsided treaties ceding land to the settlers. Future treaties forced out these and Dakota peoples and opened nearly all land to settlers. As a territory, Iowa had a small number of enslaved people (16 counted in the 1840 census). When Iowa earned statehood, its new constitution outlawed slavery. Many native-born settlers in Iowa were Yankee, who had moved West from New England and upstate New York across what is now the upper Midwest. Edward Hatch (December 22, 1832 – April 11, 1889) was a career American soldier who served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. After the war, he became the first commander of the 9th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, a buffalo soldier regiment with African-American troops commanded by White officers. Biography Hatch, the son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Scott Hatch, was born in Bangor, Maine, and educated at the Norwich Military Academy in Vermont. As early as 1858, he was a resident of Muscatine, Iowa, where he engaged in the lumber business. He volunteered for service as a private in the Union Army at the outbreak of the Civil War. The 2nd Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, also known as the 22nd Tennessee Cavalry after it was consolidated with the 21st Tennessee Cavalry (Wilson’s), was a cavalry unit of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War, organized on June 12, 1862. The unit was originally commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Clark Russell Barteau, who was promoted from the rank of private (rank), private on the day that he was placed in command of the new regiment. He was promoted to colonel a year later. Earlier, in May, 1862, the 4th Battalion Tennessee Cavalry (Branner's) and the 5th Battalion Tennessee Cavalry (McClellan's) were consolidated as the 2nd Tennessee Cavalry under Col. Benton Barracks
Benton Barracks, also known as Camp Benton, was a United States Army barracks in St. Louis, Missouri, located at present-day St. Louis Fairground Park. Before the American Civil War, the site was owned and used by the St. Louis Agricultural and Mechanical Association, which at the time was located on the outskirts of St. Louis. The installation was used primarily as a training facility for federal soldiers attached to the Western Division of the Union Army. After the Battle of Lexington, the post and convalescent hospitals were added to the training barracks, in order to assist in treating hundreds of incoming wounded troops.
