Union (American Civil War)
During the American Civil War, the Union, also known as the North, referred to the United States led by President Abraham Lincoln. It was opposed by the secessionist Confederate States of America (CSA), informally called "the Confederacy" or "the South". The Union is named after its declared goal of preserving the United States as a constitutional union. Welaka, Florida
Welaka is a town situated on the St. Johns River in Putnam County, Florida, United States. The population was 701 as of the 2010 census. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2018 estimates, the town had a population of 712. The town is part of the Palatka Micropolitan Statistical Area. History It is not known when the area was first settled, but the nearby Mount Royal archaeological site is a possible remnant of a Timucua Indian village from c. 1250 CE to 1500 CE, and may have a connection to the town of Enacape, an important center of the Utina tribe. Department of Florida, was the military administrative department established by the Union Army. The Department of Florida was established on April 13, 1861 to defend and administer the few remaining Federal installations remaining in Florida. Following the secession of Florida in January 1861, Florida troops seized most Federal property in the state with the exceptions of Fort Zachary Taylor at Key West and Fort Pickens at Pensacola.
