28–29 April Events (Turkey)
The 28–29 April events were organised by university students to support university lecturers and protest against the repressive policies of the Democrat Party (DP) on 28 April 1960 in Istanbul, and the following day in Ankara. Two students lost their lives after police opened fire on them, and around a hundred people were injured, among them Istanbul University rector Sıddık Sami Onar, while many academics were beaten by police. About a month after the demonstrations, the National Unity Committee overthrew the Democrat Party government in the 1960 Turkish coup d'état. Background The policies adopted by the Democratic Party after 1959 began to cause economic and political problems. These created new tensions between political leaders and the military hierarchy, of concern to both university students and intellectual circles. Beyazıt Square
Beyazıt Square () lies to the north of Ordu Caddesi in the district of Fatih, Istanbul, Turkey. Officially named ''Freedom Square'' (), it is more generally known as Beyazıt Square after the early Ottoman Bayezid II Mosque on one side. The square is the former site of the Forum of Theodosius (AKA Forum Tauri) built by Constantine the Great. In 1960 with the proposal of Turgut Cansever, Beyazıt Square was given a new form but the project was not completed. In 2022 Beyazit Square was entirely re-organised according to the urban design project prepared by Ali Kural and Deniz Çalış Kural. Overview Facing the mosque across the square is a medrese that formed part of its complex. In the past this served as a Museum of Calligraphy. Kızılay, Ankara
Kızılay is the city center of Ankara Province in the municipality and district of Çankaya District, Çankaya, Turkey.Mahalle

It is named after the Kızılay Derneği (Turkish Red Crescent) whose former headquarters was located at the Kızılay Square. Güvenpark in Kızılay is the center park and a common meeting location which occasionally serves the population as a recreational area. Ankara Metro, Ankaray and the bus stops nearby, provide easy access to other parts of the city. On March 13, 2016, Kızılay suffered March 2016 Ankara bombing, a terrorist bombing which killed 37 people and injured 125. The bombing took place on Atatürk Boulevard near Güvenpark.

555k Protests
The 555K protests were the first example of civil disobedience in the history of Turkey. They were organised by students for 5pm on 5 May 1960 in Kızılay, Ankara to protest against the ruling Democrat Party. Events The death of two students in the clashes between the police and the students during the 28-29 April events made the atmosphere in the country very tense. A group of young people decided to organise a protest. They mobilised others by word of mouth with the watchword "555k" - that is at 5pm on 5 May in Kızılay, but the details of exactly how or where the protest was to begin were unknown to those attending. At the agreed time, Cemal Süreya, Altan Öymen and their friends were ready for action but when none took initiative to start the protest they began it themselves around half past five. The Ankara University, Law School ( formerly known ''Ankara Adliye Hukuk Mektebi'' or ''AUHF'') is the faculty of law at Ankara University in Turkey. History Ankara University, Law School was established as part of Turkey's legal reforms, spearheaded by Mahmut Esat Bozkurt. The Hippodrome of Constantinople (; ; ) was a circus that was the sporting and social centre of Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire. Turan Emeksiz
Ahmet Turan Emeksiz (11 November 1940 – 28 April 1960) was a Turkish university student who was killed in 1960 street demonstrations. Life Emeksiz was born in Gündüzbey village of Yeşilyurt district, Malatya Province in 1940. After high school in Malatya, he studied in the Forestry school of Istanbul University. On 28 April 1960 he took part in a student demonstration against the Committee of Inquest a new super-power committee established by the Democrat Party (DP) government. During the demonstrations he was killed by a police bullet. The police department claimed that the bullet which killed Emeksiz was a bounced bullet. But the issue was not resolved for more than 50 years. Finally in 2013 it was officially reported that the bullet was intentionally aimed at Emeksiz.
