The 28th NAACP Theatre Awards, presented by the NAACP, honored outstanding representations and achievements of people of color in theater during the 2018 calendar year. The ceremony was hosted by Loni Love and took place on Monday, June 17, 2019 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, Los Angeles. ''Zoot Suit'' is a play written by Luis Valdez, featuring incidental music by Daniel Valdez and Lalo Guerrero. ''Zoot Suit'' is based on the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial and the Zoot Suit Riots. Debuting in 1979, ''Zoot Suit'' was the first Chicano play on Broadway. In 1981, Luis Valdez also directed a filmed version of the play, combining stage and film techniques. Plot ''Zoot Suit'' tells the story of Henry Reyna and the 38th Street Gang, who were tried for the Sleepy Lagoon murder in Los Angeles, during World War II. After a run-in with a neighboring gang at the local lovers lane, Sleepy Lagoon, the 38th Street Gang gets into a fight at a party, where a young man is murdered. August Wilson (né Frederick August Kittel Jr.; April 27, 1945 – October 2, 2005) was an American playwright. He has been referred to as the "theater's poet of Black America". He is best known for a series of 10 plays, collectively called ''The Pittsburgh Cycle'' (or ''The Century Cycle'')'','' which chronicle the experiences and heritage of the African-American community in the 20th century. Plays in the series include '' Fences'' (1987) and '' The Piano Lesson'' (1990), each of which won Wilson the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, as well as '' Ma Rainey's Black Bottom'' (1984) and '' Joe Turner's Come and Gone'' (1988). BeBe Winans
Benjamin "BeBe" Winans (born September 17, 1962) is an American gospel and R&B singer from Detroit, Michigan. He is a member of the noted Winans family, most members of which are also gospel artists. Winans has released nine solo albums, seven with his sister CeCe as BeBe & CeCe Winans, and one with three Winans brothers. ''The PTL Club'' Winans released several albums, first with his sister CeCe, and later as a solo artist. Desmond Steven McAnuff (born June 19, 1952) is the American-Canadian former artistic director of Canada's Stratford Festival and director of such Broadway musical theatre productions as '' Big River'', '' The Who's Tommy'' and ''Jersey Boys''.
