22nd Street (San Francisco)
22nd Street is an east–west street passing through the Noe Valley, Mission, and Potrero Hill districts of San Francisco, California. The street is discontinuous and exists in several sections: the main western section between Hoffman Avenue and the Bayshore Freeway, a segment from Vermont Street to Wisconsin Street, a short alley off of Missouri Street, and an eastern section from Texas Street to Pier 70. Below the elevated Interstate 280 and at-grade eastern section lies 22nd Street station, Caltrain's only station beneath ground level. Steepness It is one of the steepest streets in the city. In the 250-foot block from Vicksburg to Church Streets in the Noe Valley neighborhood, the city map shows a 79-foot descent along the south side of the street ( along the north side) for an average grade of just over 31%, about the same as the steepest block of Filbert Street in San Francisco. Noe Valley, San Francisco, California
Noe Valley ( ; originally spelt Noé) is a neighborhood in the central part of San Francisco, California. It is named for Don José de Jesús Noé, noted 19th-century Californio statesman and ranchero, who owned much of the area and served as mayor. Location Roughly speaking, Noe Valley is bounded by 21st Street to the north, 30th Street to the south, San Jose Ave and Guerrero Street to the east, and Grand View Avenue and Diamond Heights Blvd to the west. Potrero Hill, San Francisco
Potrero Hill is a residential neighborhood in San Francisco, California. It is known for its views of the San Francisco Bay and city skyline, its proximity to many destination spots, its sunny weather, and having two freeways and a Caltrain station. Interstate 280 (California)
Interstate 280 (I-280) is a major north–south auxiliary Interstate Highway in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. It runs from I-680 and US Route 101 (US 101) in San Jose to King and 5th streets in San Francisco, running just to the west of the larger cities of San Francisco Peninsula for most of its route. From I-880 in San Jose to State Route 1 (SR 1) in Daly City, I-280 was built and dedicated as the Junipero Serra Freeway, after the Spanish Franciscan friar who founded the first nine of 21 Spanish missions in California from San Diego to San Francisco. 22nd Street Station (Caltrain)
22nd Street station is a Caltrain commuter rail station located south of 22nd Street between the Dogpatch and Potrero Hill neighborhoods of San Francisco, California beneath the Interstate 280 freeway viaduct. The only below-grade Caltrain station, it is bracketed on the north and south by two tunnels which take the line under the eastern slope of Potrero Hill. The station is reached only by stairways from 22nd Street and Iowa Street – there are no ramps or elevators between the platforms and street level – and is thus not accessible. The narrow stairways create bottlenecks, especially when northbound trains arrive. A December 2021 study recommended the installation of ramps as an interim accessibility measure pending future reconstruction or relocation. The station opened when the Southern Pacific Railroad built the Bayshore Cutoff in 1907. The station was originally known as 23rd Street. Caltrain
Caltrain (reporting mark JPBX) is a California commuter rail line serving the San Francisco Peninsula and Santa Clara Valley (Silicon Valley). The southern terminus is in San Jose at Tamien station with weekday rush hour service running as far as Gilroy. The northern terminus of the line is in San Francisco at 4th and King Streets. Caltrain has 28 regular stops, one limited-service weekday-only stop ( College Park), one weekend-only stop ( Broadway), and one football-only stop ( Stanford). While average weekday ridership in 2019 exceeded 63,000, impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have been significant: in August 2022, Caltrain had an average weekday ridership of 18,600 passengers. The grade (also called slope, incline, gradient, mainfall, pitch or rise) of a physical feature, landform or constructed line refers to the tangent of the angle of that surface to the horizontal. It is a special case of the slope, where zero indicates horizontality. A larger number indicates higher or steeper degree of "tilt". Filbert Street (San Francisco)
Filbert Street is an east-west street on the north side of San Francisco, California. Its western end is at Lyon Street on the east edge of The Presidio and, spanning eastward, it crosses several large thoroughfares, including Van Ness Avenue and Columbus Avenue, and ends its drivable length at Kearny Street, on Telegraph Hill below Coit Tower. East of Kearny Street, it becomes a series of pedestrian step streets and walkways, with the exception of a small parking area west of Sansome Street. Chronicle Books is a San Francisco-based American publisher of books for adults and children. The company was established in 1967 by Phelps Dewey, an executive with Chronicle Publishing Company, then-publisher of the ''San Francisco Chronicle''.
