22nd Guam Legislature
The 22nd Guam Legislature was a meeting of the Guam Legislature. It convened in Hagatna, Guam on January 4, 1993, and ended on January 2, 1995, during the 3rd and 4th years of Joseph F. Ada's 2nd Gubernatorial Term. In the 1992 Guamanian general election, the Democratic Party of Guam won a fourteen-to-seven (14-7) supermajority of seats in the Guam Legislature. The Legislature of Guam ( ch, Liheslaturan Guåhan) is the law-making body for the United States territory of Guam. The unicameral legislative branch consists of fifteen senators, each serving for a two-year term. All members of the legislature are elected at-large with the island under one whole district. After the enactment of the Guam Organic Act in 1950, the First Guam Legislature was elected composing of 21 elected members. Guam is a two-party presidential representative democracy, in which the Governor is the head of government. Guam is an organized, unincorporated territory of the United States, with policy relations between Guam and the US under the jurisdiction of the Office of Insular Affairs. Background The economic situation in Guam is currently dependent on the significant U.S. military presence there. Its status as a tourist destination for Japanese, Singaporeans and South Koreans also contributes to Guam's economy, as well as economic migrants from the Philippines working at lower-wage jobs in the hospitality industry. Anthony Crisostomo "Tony" Blaz (September 22, 1958 – January 30, 2016) was a Guamanian politician previously served a total of five terms as a Senator in the Guam Legislature and was chosen by his colleagues to serve as Vice Speaker of the 24th and 25th Guam Legislatures, respectively. Thomas V. Camacho Tanaka (born August 7, 1940) is a Republican politician from Guam, previous Speaker of the territorial Senate from 1979 to 1983, and previous candidate for the position of Governor of Guam. Biography He was born on August 7, 1940, to Tomas Santos Tanaka and Maria Josefina Garcia Camacho, and also the nephew of a former Governor of Guam Carlos Camacho.
