20th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment
The 20th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment was a volunteer infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 20th Wisconsin was organized at Madison, Wisconsin, and mustered into Federal service August 23, 1862. The regiment was mustered out on July 14, 1865, at Galveston, Texas. Casualties The 20th Wisconsin suffered 5 officers and 100 enlisted men killed in action or who later died of their wounds, plus another 1 officer and 145 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 251 fatalities. Commanders * Colonel Bertine Pinckney (June 1, 1862December 6, 1862) was assigned to brigade command shortly after arriving in theater, suffered a stroke and resigned in late 1862. The state flag, flag of the U.S. state of Wisconsin was first adopted in 1863, and was modified in 1979. It is a blue flag charged with the Seal of Wisconsin, state coat of arms of Wisconsin. Frederick Kusel
Frederick Kusel (November 1, 1839 – August 6, 1916) was an American politician and businessman. Born in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg, Germany, Kusel emigrated with his family in 1849 to the United States and settled in Watertown, Wisconsin. Kusel was in the retail hardware business with his family. During the American Civil War, Kusel served in the 20th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment and was commissioned captain of the regiment. Kusel served on the Watertown Common Council. He also served as Mayor of Watertown. Phineas Clawson
Phineas Clawson (October 27, 1839 – August 10, 1910) was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate. Biography Clawson was born on October 27, 1839, in Greene County, Pennsylvania. He moved to Waukesha, Wisconsin, in 1851 and to Green County, Wisconsin, in 1868. In 1863, he graduated from what is now the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During the American Civil War, Clawson served as a first lieutenant with the 20th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Union Army. He was wounded at the Battle of Prairie Grove. Other conflicts he took part in include the Siege of Vicksburg, during which time he was involved in the Yazoo City Expedition, and the Battle of Spanish Fort. James Bintliff (November 1, 1824 – March 16, 1901) was a colonel in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He briefly commanded brigades for three weeks near the end of 1864 and during most of the crucial month of April 1865. In 1866, he was nominated for appointment as and confirmed as a brevet brigadier general of volunteers in recognition of his conspicuous gallantry during the Third Battle of Petersburg on the final day of the Siege of Petersburg, April 2, 1865. The 3rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 3rd Wisconsin assembled at Camp Hamilton, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and mustered into Federal service on June 19, 1861. Its first commander was Col. Charles Smith Hamilton. The 3rd Wisconsin Infantry was a part of Gen. Nathaniel Banks' army during Jackson's Shenandoah Valley campaign of 1862. Later in the year, the 3rd Wisconsin took part in the fighting around the Cornfield during the Battle of Antietam. In 1863, after the Battle of Gettysburg, the 3rd was sent to New York, to help control the New York City draft riots.
