Estonian Restoration of Independence, legally defined as the Restoration of the Republic of Estonia, was proclaimed on 20 August 1991. On that day at 23:02 local time, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Estonia, in agreement with the Estonian Committee (the executive organ of the Congress of Estonia), declared the illegal Soviet occupation and annexation of the country terminated, and proclaimed the full restoration of the independence of Estonia. 1990 On 30 March 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Estonian SSR adopted a resolution on the state status of Estonia. Arnold Rüütel
Arnold Rüütel (, 10 May 1928 – 31 December 2024) was an Estonian politician. He was the third President of Estonia from 8 October 2001 to 9 October 2006. Rüütel was the second president of the country after the end of the 1944–1991 Soviet occupation, and the restoration of the independent Republic of Estonia on 20 August 1991. Biography Rüütel was born in the village of Pahavalla in Laimjala Parish, Saaremaa, Estonia on 10 May 1928. His parents were Feodor Rüütel (1900−1965) and Juulia Rüütel (1905−1990). Liia Hänni (née Juulik; born 4 October 1946) is an Estonian astrophysicist, social activist and former politician who voted for the Estonian restoration of Independence. Education Born in Atla, Saare County, Liia Hänni graduated from Saaremaa gymnasium in 1965 and the University of Tartu's Department of Physics in 1970. Illar Hallaste (6 May 1959, Kohtla-Järve – 27 October 2012, Tallinn) was an Estonian cleric, politician, lawyer, and businessman, most notable for being a voter for the Estonian restoration of Independence. Education Hallaste studied in Kohtla-Järve, and from the 7th grade in the Otepää branch of the Tallinn Sports Secondary School. In 1977, he graduated from Kohtla-Järve Secondary High School. After graduating from high school, Hallaste began studying at the Faculty of Law of the University of Tartu, where he was thrown out for being religious, which was discouraged by the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet government at the time. Ignar Fjuk (born 12 March 1953) is an Estonian architect, politician, and radio journalist, most notable for being one of the voters for the Estonian restoration of Independence. Born in Tartu, Fjuk graduated from Hugo Treffner Gymnasium in 1971 and from the Estonian Academy of Arts in 1976 as an architect. For years, Klassikaraadio has been broadcasting his talk show. In 1987, the Culture Council of the Estonian SSR's Artistic Associations was created on his initiative. Kaljo Ellik (9 May 1948 in Siiksaare – 27 March 2017) was an Estonian politician who voted for the Estonian restoration of Independence. Ellik graduated in 1963 from Kingisepp 1st Secondary School, in 1968 from Räpina Horticultural Engineering School, and in 1975 from the Estonian University of Life Sciences. In addition, he has studied social psychology at the Tartu Fine Arts Courses and the University of Tartu. Lembit Arro (15 April 1930 – 16 April 2022) was an Estonian general manager of a collective farm and politician who was most notable for being a voter for the Estonian restoration of Independence. Arro graduated in 1944 from Kabala Primary School, in 1957 at a high school for the preparation of Kehtna Collective Farmers (junior agronomy) and in 1969 as an agronomist at the Estonian Agricultural Academy, now the Estonian University of Life Sciences. He was chairman of the Kaiu collective farm, from 1959 to 1990. From 1990 to 1992, he was a member of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Estonia, initially belonging to the Rural Affairs Committee, later to the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. Uno Anton (4 April 1942 in Suislepa – 19 April 2012) was an Estonian politician and a voter for the Estonian restoration of Independence. He was born in Suislepa as the fifth child of six. His father died early and his mother raised their children alone. He studied at Suislepa Primary School and Mustla Secondary School. After graduating from Paide School, he worked as an excavator and at the same time studied in high school. From 1961 to 1963, he worked as an excavator at Viljandi EPT. Tõnu Anton (born 26 April 1953, in Pärnu) is an Estonian former politician and judge, most notable for being a voter for the Estonian restoration of Independence.
