SSS Islands

In order of population size, they are: Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius, and Saba (island), Saba. In some contexts, the term is also used to refer to the entire island of Saint Martin (island), Saint Martin (which also includes the Collectivity of Saint Martin), alongside Sint Eustatius and Saba. The SSS islands were island territories of the Netherlands Antilles, island territories of the Netherlands Antilles, until Dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles, its dissolution in 2010. Since then, Sint Maarten is a Kingdom of the Netherlands#Constituent countries, constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, while Sint Eustatius and Saba are Caribbean Netherlands, special municipalities of the Netherlan ...

Solid-state Storage
Solid-state storage (SSS) is non-volatile computer storage that has no moving parts; it uses only electronic circuits. This solid-state design dramatically differs from the commonly-used competing technology of electromechanical magnetic storage which uses moving media coated with magnetic material. Generally, SSS is much faster but more expensive per unit of storage. SSS devices typically use flash memory, but some use battery-backed random-access memory (RAM). Devices come in various types, form factors, storage sizes, and interfacing options to satisfy application requirements for many computer systems and appliances. Overview Historically, computer system secondary storage has been implemented to leverage magnetic properties of surface coatings applied to rotating platters (in hard disk drives and floppy disks) or linearly moving strips of plastic film (in tape drives). Pairing such magnetic media with read/write heads allows data to be written by separately magnet ...

Sigue Sigue Sputnik

History Early years The band, which is often just called "Sputnik", was formed by Tony James, ex-bassist of the defunct Generation X,Handelman, David (1986)Sigue Sigue Sputnik: 'Fantasy band?', ''Gettysburg Times'', 8 August 1986, p. 26. Retrieved 25 September 2010 and Neal X (Whitmore), who recruited singer Martin Degville. Degville was a clothes designer and supplied the band's wardrobe, and YaYa, the store where he worked, became the band's base. Their first gig was in Paris, supporting Johnny Thunders, with James' former Generation X colleague and then drummer for Thunders, Mark Laff, on drums. Mick Jones, formerly of the Clash, ...

Superior Sagittal Sinus
The superior sagittal sinus (also known as the superior longitudinal sinus), within the human head, is an unpaired dural venous sinus lying along the attached margin of the falx cerebri. It allows blood to drain from the lateral aspects of the anterior cerebral hemispheres to the confluence of sinuses. Cerebrospinal fluid drains through arachnoid granulations into the superior sagittal sinus and is returned to the venous circulation. Structure It is triangular in section. It is narrower anteriorly, and gradually increases in size as it passes posterior-ward. It commences at the foramen cecum, through which it receives emissary veins from the nasal cavity. It passes posterior-ward along its entire course. It is accommodated within a groove which runs across the inner surface of the frontal bone, the adjacent margins of the two parietal lobes, and the superior division of the cruciate eminence of the occipital lobe. Near the internal occipital protuberance, it deviates to e ...

Subclavian Steal Syndrome
Subclavian steal syndrome (SSS), also called subclavian steal steno-occlusive disease, is a medical condition characterized by retrograde (reversed) blood flow in the vertebral artery or the internal thoracic artery. This reversal occurs due to proximal stenosis (narrowing) or occlusion of the subclavian artery. The phenomenon of flow reversal is called subclavian steal or subclavian steal phenomenon, regardless of whether signs or symptoms are present. In this condition, the affected arm may receive blood supply flowing in a retrograde direction down the vertebral artery, potentially compromising the vertebrobasilar circulation. Subclavian steal syndrome is considered more severe than typical vertebrobasilar insufficiency. Signs and symptoms * Presyncope (sensation that one is about to faint). * Syncope (fainting). * Neurologic deficits. * Blood pressure differential between the arms. * Severe memory problems. * Hands showing circulation problems (hands can have blotchy patch ...

Sick Sinus Syndrome
Sinus node dysfunction (SND), also known as sick sinus syndrome (SSS), is a group of abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) usually caused by a malfunction of the sinus node, the heart's primary pacemaker. Tachycardia-bradycardia syndrome is a variant of sick sinus syndrome in which the arrhythmia alternates between fast and slow heart rates. Signs and symptoms Often sinus node dysfunction produces no symptoms, especially early in the disease course. Signs and symptoms usually appear in more advanced disease and more than 50% of patients will present with syncope or transient near-fainting spells as well as bradycardias that are accompanied by rapid heart rhythms, referred to as tachycardia-bradycardia syndrome Other presenting signs or symptoms can include confusion, fatigue, palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, headache, and nausea. Patients can also present with symptoms of congestive heart failure, stroke or transient ischemic attacks due to the abnormal rhythm. Com ...

Sensation Seeking Scale
The Sensation Seeking Scale is one of the most common psychological instruments for measuring sensation seeking. It was created in 1964 by Marvin Zuckerman, at the University of Delaware.Zuckerman, Marvin, et al. "Development of a sensation-seeking scale." Journal of Consulting Psychology 28.6 (1964): 477. Zuckerman created the scale with the purpose of better understanding personality traits such as neuroticism, antisocial behavior, and psychopathy.Arnett, J. (1993). Sensation Seeking: A New Conceptualization And A New Scale. Personality and Individual Differences, 16(2), 289-296. Retrieved October 1, 2014, from http://www.jeffreyarnett.com/aiss1992article.pdf This has gone through a few iterations and is currently on its 1978 version: SSS-V. There are 4 different aspects (subscales), which are: Thrill and Adventure Seeking (TAS); Disinhibition (Dis); Experience Seeking (ES); and Boredom Susceptibility (BS). Each subscale contains 10 items, making a total of 40 items. Zuckerman has ...

Irlen Syndrome
Irlen syndrome (or scotopic sensitivity syndrome) is a purported medical condition of disordered visual processing, which, it is proposed, can be treated by wearing colored lenses. The ideas of Irlen syndrome are pseudoscientific and not supported by scientific evidence, and its treatment has been described as a health fraud that takes advantage of vulnerable people. The condition was proposed in the 1980s. Irlen method The Irlen method uses colored overlays and tinted lenses in the form of glasses or contact lenses. The method is intended to correct visual processing problems; it is claimed the resultant retiming of visual signals in the brain improves symptoms associated with Irlen syndrome. History In 1980, New Zealand teacher Olive Meares described the visual distortions some individuals reported when reading from white paper. In 1983, while working under a federal research grant at the California State University of Long Beach, American psychologist Helen Irlen thought ...

SSS*
SSS* is a search algorithm, introduced by George Stockman in 1979, that conducts a state space search traversing a game tree in a best-first fashion similar to that of the A* search algorithm. SSS* is based on the notion of solution trees. Informally, a solution tree can be formed from any arbitrary game tree by pruning the number of branches at each MAX node to one. Such a tree represents a complete strategy for MAX, since it specifies exactly one MAX action for every possible sequence of moves made by the opponent. Given a game tree, SSS* searches through the space of partial solution trees, gradually analyzing larger and larger subtrees, eventually producing a single solution tree with the same root and Minimax value as the original game tree. SSS* never examines a node that alpha–beta pruning would prune, and may prune some branches that alpha–beta would not. Stockman speculated that SSS* may therefore be a better general algorithm than alpha–beta. However, Igor Roiz ...
