The 202nd Coastal Division () was an infantry Division (military), division of the Royal Italian Army during World War II. Royal Italian Army coastal divisions were second line divisions formed with reservists and equipped with second rate materiel. Recruited locally, they were often commanded by officers called out of retirement.Jowett p 6 History The division was activated on 15 November 1941 in Palermo by reorganizing the II Coastal Sector Command. The division was assigned to XII Army Corps (Italy), XII Army Corps, which was responsible for the defense of the western half of the island of Sicily. In January 1942 the division moved its headquarter to Castelvetrano. The division was responsible for the Coastal defence and fortification, coastal defense of the coast between Marsala and Sciacca. Division (military)
A division is a large military unit or Formation (military), formation, usually consisting of between 10,000 and 25,000 soldiers. In most armies, a division is composed of several regiments or brigades; in turn, several divisions typically make up a corps. Historically, the division has been the default combined arms unit capable of independent Military tactics, operations.
