2025 VFL Season
The 2025 VFL season is the 143rd season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), a second-tier Australian rules football competition played in the states of Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. The season began on 21 March and is scheduled to conclude on either 20 September or 21 September with the grand final. Background Death of Dale Tapping On 4 February 2025, coach Dale Tapping died, two years after he was diagnosed with myeloma, an aggressive form of blood cancer. Essendon had appointed Tapping as its VFL coach for the 2025 season only several months prior on 11 October 2024. He had previously served as 's VFL coach from 2013 until the end of the 2016 season, and was named VFL Coach of the Year in 2016. Representative Matches In Australian Rules Football
Interstate matches in Australian rules football are matches between representative teams played under the Australian rules, most notably of the colonies and later Australian states and territories. Senior intercolonial representative matches took place from 1879 to the turn of the 20th century. For most of the 20th century, the absence of a national club competition in Australia meant that interstate matches were regarded as important events. Steven Morris (Australian Footballer)
Steven Morris (born 31 December 1988) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Junior and state league football Morris grew up on his family's farm in the Victorian town of Toolern Vale, 39 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. He attended high school and played school football for St. Bernard's in Melbourne's north. In 2007 Morris played for and captained the Western Jets in the TAC Cup. He was named in 2012 as a member of the Jets' all time best-22, celebrating the club's 21st anniversary. Morris was passed over in successive drafts in 2006 and 2007 before making the decision to leave home and take a chance to play the SANFL. Brendan McCartney
Brendan McCartney (born 23 October 1960) is the former senior coach of the Western Bulldogs football club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He coached 66 games in 3 seasons before he resigned from the job. He has served as the development and strategy coach of the Melbourne Football Club since 2015. Playing career In his playing days, Brendan McCartney played in the Geelong Football League for the Newtown & Chilwell Football Club. He is one of the few AFL coaches who never played at the highest level. His father, Graeme McCartney, played one senior game with Richmond in 1957. Josh Fraser
Joshua Fraser (born 5 January 1982) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club and the Gold Coast Suns in the Australian Football League (AFL). Playing career From Mansfield via Murray U18, Fraser was the number one pick in the 1999 National Draft, going to Collingwood. Fraser played 21 games in his first season. He won an AFL Rising Star nomination in his debut year. He played all 25 games in 2002, kicked 37 goals and played in the Grand Final team where he kicked three goals, following a three-goal haul in the Preliminary Final. Andy Otten
Andrew Otten (born 15 February 1989) is a former professional Australian rules football player who played for the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Otten was Adelaide’s second selection in the 2007 National Draft, pick 27 overall, having recorded strong results at the 2007 NAB AFL Draft Camp ranking in the top 2% for the vertical leap (92 cm), top ten for agility and the top 20% for the beep test (14.2). Matthew Primus
Matthew Richard Primus (born 12 January 1975) is an Australian rules football coach and former player. He has served as the head coach of the Southport Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) since 2025. Primus previously played for, captained and later coached the Port Adelaide Football Club. He was also an assistant coach at the Gold Coast Suns from 2013 until 2018. Brendon Goddard
Brendon James Goddard (born 20 May 1985) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for St Kilda and Essendon in the Australian Football League (AFL). He played for the St Kilda Football Club from 2003 to 2012, then with Essendon from 2013 to 2018. He was the captain of Essendon during the 2016 season. Jake Batchelor (born 13 February 1992) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Batchelor played his junior footy at the Frankston Rovers in Victoria and went on to play with the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup, he was drafted to Richmond with their second selection, the 30th overall, in the 2010 AFL draft. 7mate is an Australian free-to-air digital television multichannel, which was launched by the Seven Network on 25 September 2010.
