2025 Tristan Da Cunha General Election
General elections were held in Tristan da Cunha on 5 March 2025 to elect eight members of the Island Council and the Chief Islander. Electoral system The 12-member Island Council consists of the Administrator as President, three appointed members and eight elected members, who are elected by plurality-at-large voting. At least one elected member of the council must be a woman. If there are no women among the eight candidates that receive the most votes, only the top seven male candidates are declared elected, alongside the woman that received the highest number of votes. If there are no female candidates, a by-election is held for the eighth seat, in which only female candidates can stand. The Chief Islander is elected on a separate ballot by first-past-the-post voting, and must also be elected to the Island Council to be eligible to become Chief Islander. Tristan da Cunha (), colloquially Tristan, is a remote group of volcano, volcanic islands in the South Atlantic Ocean. Ian Lavarello (born 1970) is a Tristanian politician who is currently serving as Tristan da Cunha's Chief Islander. He has been elected to the role on four occasions, most recently during the 2025 Tristan da Cunha general election. James Patrick Glass (born 20 January 1961) is a Tristanian politician who has served as Tristan da Cunha's Chief Islander for a record five times. He was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire during the 2023 New Year Honours. In May 2023 he attended the coronation of Charles III Family Glass was born in Stanley in the Falkland Islands on 20 January 1961 to Wilson Martyn Charlton Glass and Maria (Rogers). Conrad Jack Glass (born 20 January 1961) is a Tristanian police inspector and civil servant who was Tristan da Cunha's former Chief Islander from 2007 to 2010. Glass is the first islander to have written a book about the island: ''Rockhopper Copper'' (2005). Early life Glass was born on Tristan da Cunha on 20 January 1961 to Noel Edwin (Spike) and Monica Rose Glass (Rogers). When Queen Mary's Peak erupted later that year, he and his family were evacuated to the United Kingdom. His family stayed in Calshot, Hampshire, for two years before returning to the South Atlantic island. Glass began his schooling in World War II-era navy huts on Tristan at the age of five, and in 1974, continued to study at the island's new school. He left school at the age of 15, but took further studies a year later so he could pass British exams.
