2025 Sumy Oblast Incursion
In an effort to counter Kursk offensive (2024–2025), Ukraine's 2024 offensive in Kursk, in early 2025 Russian forces launched cross-border incursions from Russia into Ukraine's adjacent Sumy Oblast. On 10 January 2025, Russian troops crossed the Russia–Ukraine border, international border into Ukraine's Sumy Oblast, advancing west of Zhuravka. However, a few days later, the Ukrainian military claimed their forces had successfully pushed back the Russian attack. In mid-February, Russian forces launched another cross-border incursion, claiming to have entered the villages of Novenke, Sumy Oblast, Novenke and Basivka, Sumy Oblast, Basivka. The former village was captured within a few days. By the end of February, Ukraine's Center for Combatting Disinformation acknowledged the presence of Russian forces, while DeepStateMap.Live, DeepState described Basivka and Novenke, Sumy Oblast, Novenke as "gray zones." A series of border skirmishes has taken place along the Russia–Ukraine border in Sumy Oblast, Sumy and Chernihiv Oblast, Chernihiv Oblasts since the Northern Ukraine campaign, withdrawal of Russian troops from northern Ukraine. Eduard Mykhailovych Moskaliov (; born 22 December 1973) is a major general of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. Career Moskaliov was appointed as the chief of staff - first deputy commander of the Ukrainian Operational Command East in 2019. Oleksandr Syrskyi
Oleksandr Stanislavovych Syrskyi (; born 26 July 1965) is a Ukrainian military officer. Holding the rank of four-star general, he has served as the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine since . Previously, he was the commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces from 2019 to 2024, and the commander of the Joint Forces Operation from May to August 2019. During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Syrskyi commanded the defence of Kyiv. In September 2022, he commanded the Kharkiv counteroffensive. He then led the defense of Bakhmut into 2023. Sudzha
Sudzha (, ) is a town and the administrative center of Sudzhansky District in Kursk Oblast, Russia, located on the Sudzha and Oleshnya rivers southwest of Kursk, the administrative center of the oblast. It has a population of 5,127 people. It is the natural gas exchange feeder where the Trans-Siberian pipeline meets the Brotherhood pipeline. Ryzhivka (; ) is a village in Sumy Raion (district) in Sumy Oblast of northeastern Ukraine, on the left bank of the Seim river, at some hundred meters of the Russia–Ukraine border.
