2025 Jamaican General Election
General elections are scheduled to be held in Jamaica in 2025. The incumbent government Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is seeking a third term in office against the opposition People's National Party, People’s National Party (PNP). Background Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs Marlene Malahoo Forte said that Jamaica would transition to being a Republicanism in Jamaica, republic before the next general election. In December 2024 a bill was tabled on transitioning to becoming a republic. The bill requires review by joint committees, followed by a parliamentary vote and a referendum to approve the change. Preselection contests will be held in March 2025. Andrew Holness
Andrew Michael Holness, (born 22 July 1972) is a Jamaican politician who has served as Prime Minister of Jamaica since 3 March 2016, having previously served from 2011 to 2012, and as Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) since 2011. Holness previously served as Prime Minister from 23 October 2011 to 5 January 2012. He succeeded Bruce Golding as Prime Minister and decided to go to the polls in the 29 December 2011 general election in an attempt to get his own mandate from the Jamaican electorate. He failed in that bid, however, losing to the People's National Party led by Portia Simpson-Miller, with the PNP gaining 42 seats to the JLP's 21. Following that defeat, Holness served as Leader of the Opposition from January 2012 to March 2016, when he once again assumed the position of prime minister. The governor-general of Jamaica () is the representative of the Jamaican monarch, currently King Charles III, in Jamaica. The governor-general is appointed by the monarch on the recommendation of the prime minister of Jamaica. The functions of the governor-general include appointing ministers, judges, and ambassadors; giving royal assent to legislation passed by parliament; issuing writs for election. 2007 Jamaican General Election
General elections were held in Jamaica on 3 September 2007. They had originally been scheduled for 27 August 2007 but were delayed due to Hurricane Dean. The preliminary results indicated a slim victory for the opposition Jamaican Labour Party (JLP) led by Bruce Golding, which grew by two seats from 31–29 to 33-27 after official recounts. The JLP defeated the People's National Party after eighteen years of unbroken governance.
