2025 Diapaga Attack
On March 28, 2025, jihadists from Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin attacked Burkinabe forces at Diapaga, Est Region, Burkina Faso, killing at least sixty soldiers. The attack was revenge for the massacre of over 58 civilians at Solenzo on March 11. Background Between March 10 and 11, 2025, soldiers from the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland and the Burkinabe Army massacred over 58 Fulani civilians near the town of Solenzo in northwest Burkina Faso. The victims were accused of sheltering jihadists who had attacked VDP fighters earlier that month. Human Rights Watch deplored the massacre, and called for an investigation. HRW also warned of imminent reprisal attacks by jihadist groups. Diapaga
Diapaga is a city in, and the capital of, Tapoa Province, situated in eastern Burkina Faso. The main ethnic group in the city are the Gourmantché. It is a major centre for health services in the region. The W Park militant group of Burkina Faso are reported to have their headquarters in the town. On November 21, 2023, a mass shooting occurred in Diapaga, when coordinated and synchronized attacks that killed at least 15, predominately civilians. The attacks targeted two neighborhoods in Diapaga, inflicting casualties including three Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP, civilian auxiliaries to the army) and twelve civilians. On March 28, 2025, Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) launched an assault on the Burkinabe army and VDP base in the city, which led to the deaths of over 100 people, including civilians and the commander of the station, Yannick Sawadogo. Volunteers For The Defense Of The Homeland
The Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (, abbr. VDP) is an auxiliary and irregular force in Burkina Faso. Formed to fight jihadist insurgents in the country, it operates as an auxiliary force supporting the Burkina Faso Armed Forces. History On November 7, 2019, following a jihadist attack on a mining convoy, the president of Burkina Faso called for the creation of a civilian self-defense force. On January 21, 2020, the parliament of Burkina Faso passed a law establishing the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland. Between March 10 and 11, 2025, militiamen from the pro-government Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland executed at least 130 Fulani civilians in several villages near Solenzo, Boucle du Mouhoun Region, Burkina Faso.
