2024–25 AJHL Season
The 2024–25 AJHL season was the 61st season of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). Competition began on 24 August 2024 with a 35-game exhibition season, followed by a 54-game regular season which ran from 13 September 2024 to 15 March 2025. The Calgary Canucks finished the regular season in first place overall, and went on to win the AJHL championship Inter Pipeline Cup and the national championship 2025 Centennial Cup. The Canucks hosted the national championship as well as the 2024 AJHL showcase. Whitecourt Wolverines goaltender, Zac Onyskiw, was named most valuable player by the AJHL and the CJHL. The CJHL is made up of nine Junior A leagues (including the AJHL) from across Canada. Onyskiw finished the regular season with a 1.87 goals against average (GAA) and a save percentage of .939. Alberta Junior Hockey League
The Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) is an Alberta-based Junior A ice hockey league that belongs to the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL). It was formed as a five-team league in 1964. The 2023–24 season began with 16 teams, however 5 teams did not finish the season after it was announced that they planned to join the BCHL in the 2024–25 season. The regular season league champions receive the Dave Duchak Trophy. The playoff champions receive the Inter Pipeline Cup (previously known as the Carling O'Keefe trophy and Gas Drive Cup). The winner of the AJHL playoffs continues on to play in the Centennial Cup tournament, which determines Canadian Junior A champion. Hockey Manitoba is the governing body of amateur ice hockey in the province of Manitoba, Canada. Hockey Manitoba was founded in 1914 as the ''Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association'' and is a branch affiliate of Hockey Canada. Fort McMurray Oil Barons
The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are a Junior A ice hockey team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). They play in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada at the Centerfire Place. The Oil Barons have won three AJHL playoff championships, three regular season titles, and one National Junior A Championship. Devon, Alberta
Devon is a town in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region of Alberta, Canada. It is approximately southwest of Edmonton, the provincial capital, along the southern bank of the North Saskatchewan River. Bonnyville
Bonnyville is a town situated in East Northern Alberta, Canada between Cold Lake and St. Paul. The Municipal District (MD) of Bonnyville No. 87 surrounds the community. The Bonnyville Pontiacs are a Junior ice hockey#Junior A, Junior A ice hockey team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. They play in Bonnyville, Alberta, Canada at the R. J. Lalonde Arena. History The Pontiacs entered the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) as the league's ninth team for the 1991–92 season, adopting the Pontiacs name and logo originally used by the Senior ice hockey, Senior A team of the same name in the 1950s. The franchise was awarded, along with the 1991–92 all-star game, on June 1, 1991, leaving just two months for the new organization to find staff and players before the start of the season. Okotoks Oilers
The Okotoks Oilers are a junior A ice hockey team in the BCHL based in Okotoks, Alberta. The team plays its home games at the Viking Rentals Centre. The team joined the BCHL on February 1, 2024 after defecting from the AJHL along with four other Alberta-based teams. History In June 2004, the AJHL board of governors approved the sale and relocation of the Crowsnest Pass Timberwolves franchise to Okotoks. The franchise was granted a one-year leave of absence in 2004–05 to prepare for its first season in its new home. Players from the 2003–04 Timberwolves team were loaned out to other AJHL and BCHL teams. Though dormant, the Oilers franchise was awarded the 2004–05 AJHL all-star game, which acted as a preview of the AJHL brand for the citizens of Okotoks. Brooks Bandits
The Brooks Bandits are a Junior ice hockey team in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) based in Brooks, Alberta. The teams plays its home games at the Centennial Regional Arena. The team was formerly in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), until they joined the BCHL in February 2024. History The Brooks Bandits were awarded an expansion franchise by the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) in 1999 and began play in the 2000–01 season. The franchise secured its expansion fee through what they call "The Founding Fathers", a group of 17 local businesses and individuals who donated the money needed to finance the team in exchange for lifetime benefits with the team. Blackfalds Bulldogs
The Blackfalds Bulldogs is a Junior ice hockey team that plays in the Alberta Division of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) based in Blackfalds, Alberta, Canada. Their inaugural season in Blackfalds was in 2021–22. The team is owned by Doug Quinn and Jodie Quinn. The team plays at the Eagle Builders Centre in Blackfalds. The team left the AJHL to join the BCHL midway through the 2023–24 season. History After several seasons of struggling financially, the Calgary Mustangs of the AJHL commenced negotiations to relocate its franchise to Strathmore. After the relocation deal fell through, the team requested a leave of absence from the AJHL for the 2019–20 season. Spruce Grove Saints
The Spruce Grove Saints are a Junior ice hockey team in the BCHL. They play in Spruce Grove, Alberta, Canada, with home games at the Thompson Family Arena. The team was originally a member of the AJHL and joined the BCHL in 2024. History Prior to their 2024 departure, the Saints' franchise was the only franchise remaining from the inception of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). The franchise began as the Edmonton Movers in 1963 before it merged with the Edmonton Maple Leafs organization to become the Edmonton Mets for the 1972–73 season. It then relocated to Spruce Grove as the Spruce Grove Mets for the 1974–75 season. Sherwood Park Crusaders
The Sherwood Park Crusaders are a Junior ice hockey team in the BCHL. They play in Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada, with home games at Sherwood Park Arena Sports Centre. The team was part of the AJHL, until 2024 when it switched mid-season to the BCHL. History The Edmonton Crusaders joined the AJHL in 1976 playing out of the Jasper Place Arena. The AJHL franchise was revived from a dormant entry controlled by Jim McCaddie. The Edmonton Crusaders played two seasons in the AJHL. In 1978, a group of Sherwood Park businessmen, headed by John Fisher, Frank Chase, and Al Bishop, moved the franchise to Sherwood Park. John Fisher, a Sherwood Park resident and former Alberta Oilers' player, became the first coach of the Crusaders. Kelly Buchberger
Kelly Michael Buchberger (born December 2, 1966) is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and former player. He played for several National Hockey League teams from 1986 to 2004. As a coach, he has been an assistant for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL) and a head coach of the Tri City Americans of the Western Hockey League (WHL). Playing career Buchberger has played for the Edmonton Oilers, Atlanta Thrashers, Los Angeles Kings, Phoenix Coyotes, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He also played minor hockey with the Western Hockey League Moose Jaw Warriors and pro hockey with the American Hockey League Nova Scotia Oilers.
