National Democratic Institute
The National Democratic Institute (NDI) is a non-profit American non-governmental organization whose stated mission is to "support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability". It is funded primarily by the United States and other Western governments, by major corporations and by nonprofits like the Open Society Foundations. The NDI was founded in 1983, shortly after the United States Congress created the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). The NED's creation was followed by the establishment of three related institutes: the Center for International Private Enterprise, the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, and the National Republican Institute for International Affairs, later renamed the International Republican Institute (IRI). 2024 United Kingdom General Election
The 2024 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday, 4 July 2024 to elect all 650 members of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons. The opposition Labour Party (UK), Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, won a landslide victory over the governing Conservative Party (UK), Conservative Party under Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. Labour secured 411 seats and a 174-seat majority, the fourth-best showing in the party's history and its best since 2001 United Kingdom general election, 2001. 2024 Mauritanian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Mauritania on 29 June 2024. Incumbent Mohamed Ould Ghazouani won re-election for his second and final term as President of Mauritania, president, increasing his vote share by four points. Electoral system Under Article 26 of the Constitution of Mauritania, constitution the List of heads of state of Mauritania, president is elected for a five-year term using the two-round system. If no candidate receives an absolute majority of the vote in the first round, a second round is held two weeks later between the two candidates who received the most votes. 2024 Malagasy Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Madagascar on 29 May 2024 to elect the 163 members of the National Assembly. The election took place a few months after Andry Rajoelina was re-elected in the November 2023 presidential elections, which were marked by low turnout and an opposition boycott. The ruling Young Malagasies Determined, in coalition with Together with President Andry Rajoelina (IRMAR), remained the largest bloc in the National Assembly. According to preliminary results, the coalition initially lost its majority. However, after appeals to the High Constitutional Court, the coalition regained four previously lost seats, securing 84 seats, which allowed it to maintain its majority in the new legislature. 2024 Ghanaian General Election
General elections were held in Ghana on 7 December 2024 to elect the president and all 276 members of Parliament. The incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo, having completed his constitutional term limits, was ineligible for re-election. Former President John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, won a majority of the votes, securing victory without the need for a runoff. Mahamudu Bawumia, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, conceded defeat the morning after the election. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Mahama’s running mate, made history as the first woman elected Vice President of Ghana. 2024 Gabonese Constitutional Referendum
A constitutional referendum was held and approved in Gabon on 16 November 2024. The vote was on a new constitution; it proposed, among other things, a 7-year presidential term, renewable once consecutively. The referendum led to the return to a civilian regime which the military junta promised after the coup d'état in 2023. Background After 56 years of leadership under Omar Bongo and his son, Ali Bongo, the 2023 coup brought about military rule. In September 2024, a draft of the proposed new constitution was handed to transitional president Brice Oligui Nguema. 2024 Comorian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in the Comoros on 14 January 2024. Election officials initially announced on 16 January that incumbent president Azali Assoumani had been re-elected with 63% of the vote, with a voter turnout of just 16%. However, the approved a set of results that showed Assoumani receiving 57% of the vote, with voter turnout at 56%. 2024 Chadian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Chad on 6 May 2024. The elections followed 2023 Chadian constitutional referendum, a constitutional referendum held on 17 December 2023, following the death of President Idriss Déby in 2021. Incumbent transitional president Mahamat Déby, the son of Idriss Déby, ran as the candidate of the Patriotic Salvation Movement, winning the election and leading to another extension of 34 years of rule by the Déby family. 2024 Botswana General Election
General elections were held in Botswana on 30 October 2024 to determine the composition of the 13th Parliament of Botswana as well as local councils across the country. Up for election were 61 seats of the National Assembly of Botswana, National Assembly as well as 609 local council seats, all elected through the first-past-the-post voting system. The centre-right Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), which had dominant-party system, dominated the country's politics since independence in 1966, was decisively beaten by the centre-left opposition Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC). 2024 Algerian Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Algeria on 7 September 2024. Originally scheduled for December 2024, they were brought forward by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Tebboune was challenged by Youcef Aouchiche of the Socialist Forces Front and Abdellah Hassan Cherif of the Movement of Society for Peace. Tebboune won a second term in office. Conflicting reports about the election's turnout by the National Independent Electoral Authority led to criticism from the three candidates. Aouchiche and Cherif challenged the results. Universal Suffrage
Universal suffrage or universal franchise ensures the right to vote for as many people bound by a government's laws as possible, as supported by the " one person, one vote" principle. For many, the term universal suffrage assumes the exclusion of the young and non-citizens (among others). At the same time, some insist that more inclusion is needed before suffrage can be truly universal. Democratic theorists, especially those hoping to achieve more universal suffrage, support presumptive inclusion, where the legal system would protect the voting rights of all subjects unless the government can clearly prove that disenfranchisement is necessary.
