2024 Wilmington Mayoral Election
The 2024 Wilmington mayoral election was held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, to elect the mayor of Wilmington, Delaware. Following Incumbent mayor Mike Purzycki's decision to not seek re-election, then-Governor John Carney and former Delaware treasurer and Wilmington treasurer Velda Jones-Potter ran for the Democratic nomination. On September 10, 2024, Carney defeated in the primary Jones-Potter by 743 votes. Carney ran unopposed in the general election, with his victory he became the first sitting governor ever to be elected a mayor. John Carney (Delaware Politician)
John Charles Carney Jr. (born May 20, 1956) is an American politician who has served as the 57th mayor of Wilmington, Delaware, since 2025. A member of the Democratic Party, Carney was the 74th Governor of Delaware from 2017 to 2025, the U.S. representative for from 2011 to 2017, the 24th lieutenant governor of Delaware from 2001 to 2009, and Delaware's secretary of finance from 1996 to 2000. He first unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for governor in 2008, losing to Jack Markell. He ran for governor again in 2016 and won, succeeding Markell, who was term-limited. He was reelected in 2020, defeating Republican Julianne Murray with 59.5% of the vote. 2024 United States Mayoral Elections

Bethany A. Hall-Long (born November 12, 1963) is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, Hall-Long served as the 75th governor of Delaware for two weeks in January 2025, after having served as the 26th lieutenant governor of Delaware from 2017 to 2025. She previously served in the Delaware Senate from 2008 to 2016 and the Delaware House of Representatives from 2002 to 2008. Mike Purzycki
Michael S. Purzycki (born 1945) is an American businessman and politician who served as the 56th mayor of Wilmington, Delaware, from 2017 to 2025. He previously served as the executive director of the Riverfront Development Corporation and briefly played in the National Football League for the New York Giants in the 1967–1968 season. Early life Purzycki was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1945. He graduated from Seton Hall Preparatory School in 1963 and received a football scholarship to the University of Delaware. While at the university, he played football for four years and set every Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens football receiving record. Purzycki graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in history.
