2024 United States Chess Championship
The 2024 edition of the United States Chess Championship took place at the Saint Louis Chess Club in St. Louis, Missouri from 10 October to 24 October 2024. As with every United States Chess Championship tournament since 2014, it was a round-robin tournament. Twelve players were invited to compete. Besides the reigning US champion, these included the winners of the US Open Chess Championship, the US Junior Championship, and the US Senior Open Championship. The remaining players were chosen by highest invitational rating, or were selected by the United States Chess Federation (USCF) as wildcards. The twelve qualifiers were Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, Leinier Domínguez, Levon Aronian, Sam Shankland, Ray Robson, Samuel Sevian, Hans Niemann, Christopher Yoo, Abhimanyu Mishra, Grigoriy Oparin and Awonder Liang, all of whom are grandmasters. Hans Moke Niemann (born June 20, 2003) is an American Grandmaster (chess), chess grandmaster and Twitch (service), Twitch streamer. He first entered the top 100 junior players list on March 1, 2019, and became a FIDE grandmaster on January 22, 2021. In July 2021, he won the World Open chess tournament in Philadelphia. He achieved a peak global ranking of No. 16 in September 2024. In September 2022, Niemann became embroiled in a Carlsen–Niemann controversy, controversy after defeating reigning World Chess Championship, World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the 2022 Sinquefield Cup. As a result, Carlsen withdrew from the tournament, which many interpreted as an accusation that Niemann had cheated during the match. 2024 In Chess
Gukesh Dommaraju won the 2024 World Chess Championship, becoming the youngest undisputed world chess champion at the age of 18. The Candidates Tournament and Women's Candidates Tournament were held concurrently for the first time to determine the challengers for the reigning world champions Ding Liren and Ju Wenjun. The winners, Gukesh and Tan Zhongyi, advanced to the World Chess Championship 2024 and Women's World Chess Championship 2025 respectively. Fabiano Caruana won the 2024 FIDE Circuit, encompassing major tournaments held in 2024, and qualified for the 2026 Candidates Tournament. The World Championship runner-up, Ding Liren, will no longer get an automatic Candidates spot in the 2024–2026 cycle. 2024 In Sports In Missouri
4 (four) is a number, numeral and digit. It is the natural number following 3 and preceding 5. It is a square number, the smallest semiprime and composite number, and is considered unlucky in many East Asian cultures. Sinquefield Cup
The Sinquefield Cup is an annual, closed chess tournament hosted by the Saint Louis Chess Club in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. It was first held in 2012 as a four-player round-robin tournament. In 2015, it became part of the Grand Chess Tour. In 2016, it was the Tour's third leg and the first slow time control event of the tour. The tournament was started by billionaire Rex Sinquefield as part of his efforts to boost U.S. chess and turn St. Louis into an international chess center. Grandmaster (GM) is a Chess title, title awarded to chess players by the world chess organization FIDE. Apart from World Chess Championship, World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain. Once achieved, the title is held for life, though exceptionally the title can be revoked for Cheating in chess, cheating. Awonder Liang
Awonder Liang (born April 9, 2003) is an American chess Grandmaster. A chess prodigy in his youth, he was the third-youngest American to qualify for the title of Grandmaster (after Abhimanyu Mishra and Samuel Sevian), at the age of 14. Liang was twice world champion in his age category. Education Liang attended Madison West High School. For middle school, he attended Velma Hamilton Middle School. He was a student at Charles Van Hise Elementary School for elementary school. He is now attending the University of Chicago. Career On April 16, 2011, when he played in the Hales Corners Challenge chess tournament in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Liang became the youngest chess expert in United States Chess Federation (USCF) history with a rating of 2000 at the age of 8 years and 7 days. Grigoriy Oparin
Grigoriy Alekseyevich Oparin (; born 1 July 1997) is a Russian-American chess player. He was awarded the title Grandmaster by FIDE in 2013. Career Oparin was awarded the title of Candidate Master in 2007, as a result of his second place, behind Kirill Alekseenko, at the European Youth Chess Championships in the Under 10 division. He was awarded the title International Master (IM) in 2011. The norms required for the title were achieved in Mariánské Lázně, Czech Republic, Autumn in Livingroom V. Abhimanyu Mishra
Abhimanyu Mishra (born February 5, 2009) is an American chess grandmaster. A chess prodigy, he holds the record for the world's youngest ever grandmaster, having qualified for the title at the age of 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days. Career Mishra became the youngest player ever to achieve a USCF rating of 2000 at the age of 7 years, 6 months and 22 days in September of 2016, breaking the record previously held by GM Awonder Liang.
