2024 Tallahassee Tornadoes
On the morning of May 10, 2024, two significant tornadoes moved through Leon County, Florida, United States, both of which converged over Tallahassee. While damage was primarily to trees, numerous homes suffered damage. Tornadoes also damaged the campuses of numerous educational institutions across Tallahassee. Severe damage occurred to Railroad Square and total damage caused by the storm was estimated at over $184 million (2024 USD). Meteorological synopsis The Storm Prediction Center issued an Enhanced risk (3/5) for severe weather on May 10 for parts of northeastern Florida and southern Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia. NEXRAD
NEXRAD or Nexrad (Next-Generation Radar) is a network of 159 high-resolution S-band pulse-Doppler radar, Doppler weather radars operated by the National Weather Service (NWS), an agency of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) within the United States Department of Commerce, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) within the United States Department of Transportation, Department of Transportation, and the United States Air Force, U.S. Air Force within the United States Department of Defense, Department of Defense. State Road 20 (SR 20) is a east-to-west route across northern Florida and the Florida Panhandle in the United States. Route description Okaloosa County (Niceville and Bluewater Bay) SR 20 starts at SR 85 in Niceville as John Sims Parkway, which travels to Eglin AFB East Gate through Valparaiso as westbound SR 85 and southbound SR 397. The Rapid Refresh (RR or RAP) is a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model. The model is designed to provide short-range hourly weather forecasts for North America. The Rapid Refresh was officially made operational on 1 May 2012, replacing the Rapid Update Cycle (RUC). The model also serves as the boundary conditions for the higher-resolution High Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) model, that uses a grid spacing on a domain covering the continental United States.
