2024 Fortaleza Mayoral Election
The 2024 Fortaleza mayoral election took place on 6 October 2024. Voters elected a mayor, a vice mayor, and 43 councillors. The incumbent mayor, José Sarto, a member of the Democratic Labour Party (PDT), was elected in 2020 for his first term and intends to run for reelection. Candidates André Fernandes (PL) and Evandro Leitão (PT) were the most voted and advanced for a runoff, held on 27 October 2024. Leitão was elected with 50.38% of the valid votes. The mayor's term will begin on 1 January 2025 and end on 31 December 2028. Background 2020 election and Sarto's government The last mayoral election in Fortaleza, held in 2020, resulted in the victory of the physician José Sarto Nogueira (PDT) in the second round. Sarto obtained 668,652 votes (51.69% of the valid votes), compared to the 624,892 votes (48.31% of the valid votes) obtained by Capitão Wagner ( PROS). Evandro Leitão
Evandro Sá Barreto Leitão (born 16 April 1967) is a Brazilian politician who is affiliated with the Workers' Party (PT). He is a state deputy in the state of Ceará, and is currently president of the Legislative Assembly of Ceará (Alece). In 2024, he was elected mayor of the city of Fortaleza, and took office on 1 January 2025. In 2022, he was reelected as a state deputy with 113,808 votes. This was his third consecutive run and was elected president of the state assembly for the 2021-2022 half-session and was reelected president for the other half-session, from 2023 to 2024. Biography Leitão was born on 16 April 1967 in Fortaleza. He is the son of Wellington Rocha Leitão and Silvia Maria Miranda Barreto Leitão. Evandro is married to Cristiane Sales Leitão, and has three children: Kaio, Cecília and Eduardo. He has one grandchild, Lucca.
