2024 Duluth, Minnesota Shootings
On November 7, 2024, 43-year-old Anthony Nephew killed four of his relatives in two houses in Duluth, Minnesota. He first fatally shot his ex-girlfriend and their son in Cody, then killed his wife and their son at their Denfeld home before fatally shooting himself. The shooting had undertones regarding Nephew's discontent with Donald Trump winning the 2024 United States presidential election; Nephew had threatened to kill his relatives during the previous summer if Trump were to win. Other issues regarding Nephew and his family and his mental health issues had been reported in the past few years, or mentioned by those who knew the Nephew family. ''The Handmaid's Tale'' is a futuristic dystopian novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood published in 1985. It is set in a near-future New England in a patriarchal, totalitarian theonomic state known as the Republic of Gilead, which has overthrown the United States government. Offred is the central character and narrator and one of the "Handmaids": women who are forcibly assigned to produce children for the "Commanders", who are the ruling class in Gilead. The novel explores themes of powerless women in a patriarchal society, loss of female agency and individuality, suppression of reproductive rights, and the various means by which women resist and try to gain individuality and independence. The title echoes the component parts of Geoffrey Chaucer's ''The Canterbury Tales'', which is a series of connected stories (such as "The Merchant's Tale" and "The Parson's Tale"). GoFundMe is an American for-profit crowdfunding platform that allows people to raise money for events ranging from life events such as celebrations and graduations to challenging circumstances like accidents and illnesses. From 2010 to the beginning of 2024, over $30 billion has been raised on the platform, with contributions from over 150 million donors. History The company was founded in May 2010 by Brad Damphousse and Andrew Ballester. Both had previously founded Paygr, a website dedicated to allowing members to sell their services to the public.
