2024 Cumberland Book Ban
The 2024 Cumberland book ban was a controversial fifteen-day Book censorship, ban of same-sex parenting books from the eight libraries in the Cumberland City Council's public library, public library system in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The ban was enacted by the council on 1 May and was Repeal, rescinded on 15 May. The ban led to a wider discussion of book censorship in Australian libraries. Motion During a Cumberland City Council meeting on 1 May 2024, councillor and former mayor Steve Christou requested that the motion "''That Council adopt the 'Library Strategy 2024 - 2027' as outlined in Attachment 1 of this report''" be amended with "''subject to the following being undertaken: That Council take immediate action to rid same-sex parents books/materials in Council's library service''". 2024 New South Wales Local Elections
The 2024 New South Wales local elections were held on 14 September 2024 to elect the councils of 127 of the 128 local government areas (LGAs) in New South Wales, Australia. 37 councils also held mayoral elections, and eight councils conducted referendums. The New South Wales Electoral Commission (NSWEC) conducted the elections for 125 councils, while the private Australian Election Company conducted the elections for Fairfield and Liverpool. No election was held for Central Darling as the council was under administration. Background Liverpool investigation On 26 April 2024, Minister for Local Government Ron Hoenig announced an investigation into Liverpool City Council "amid ongoing reports about dysfunction and staff matters within council". Chris Minns
Christopher John Minns (born 17 September 1979) is an Australian politician serving as the 47th and current premier of New South Wales since March 2023. He has been the leader of the New South Wales branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) since 2021 and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the district of Kogarah since 2015. He was previously the deputy mayor of Hurstville from 2007 to 2008. John Edward Graham is an Australian politician. William Kostakis is an Australian author and journalist. He is known mainly for young adult fiction, and his 2023 novel ''We Could Be Something'' won the 2024 Prime Minister's Literary Award for Young Adult Fiction.
