2024 Cité Soleil Massacre
The 2024 Cité Soleil massacre took place on 6 and 7 December 2024, in the commune of Cité Soleil in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This massacre was perpetrated by the Wharf Jeremie gang, leaving at least 207 people dead according to the United Nations Security Council, United Nations. Elderly Haitian Vodou practitioners were the primary targets. The death toll of 207 fatalities makes this massacre the most deadly gang incident in Haiti in 2024. Attack According to the National Human Rights Defense Network (RNDDH), Monel "Mikano" Felix, leader of the Wharf Jeremie gang, ordered the attack on elderly practitioners of Haitian Vodou after a Oungan, Vodou priest blamed the terminal illness of Felix's son on witchcraft conducted in the slum of Cité Soleil. Cité Soleil
Cité Soleil (; ; English: ) is an extremely impoverished and densely populated commune located in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area in Haiti. Cité Soleil originally developed as a shanty town and grew to an estimated 200,000 to 400,000 residents, the majority of whom live in extreme poverty. The area is generally regarded as one of the poorest and most dangerous areas of the Western Hemisphere and it is one of the biggest slums in the Northern Hemisphere. The area has virtually no sewers and has a poorly maintained open canal system that serves as its sewage system, few formal businesses but many local commercial activities and enterprises, sporadic but largely unpaid for electricity, a few hospitals, and two government schools, ''Lycée Nationale de Cité Soleil'', and École Nationale de Cité Soleil. Haitian Crisis (2018–present)
The existing political, economic, and social crisis began with protests in cities throughout Haiti on 7 July 2018 in response to increased fuel prices. These protests gradually evolved into demands for the resignation of the president, Jovenel Moïse. Led by opposition politician Jean-Charles Moïse (no relation), protesters demanded a transitional government, provision of social programs, and the prosecution of corrupt officials. From 2019 to 2021, massive protests called for the Jovenel Moïse government to resign. Moïse had come to power in the 2016 presidential election, which had voter turnout of only 21%. Previously, the 2015 elections had been annulled due to fraud.
