2024 Chicago Train Shooting
On September 2, 2024, a mass shooting occurred aboard a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Blue Line train as it traveled between Oak Park station and Harlem station. Four people were killed at random. The alleged shooter was taken into custody and charged with four counts of first-degree murder. Background The rate of violent crime aboard CTA trains rose sharply at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the rate of crime had since declined, the rate of crimes remained above pre-pandemic levels and gun-related robberies and attempts were at their highest level in the past decade other than 2022. The CTA had increased spending on security from $23.9 million in 2022 to $65.2 million in 2024 and by the time of the attack the CTA had run $12.4 million over budget on security spending. Oak Park, Illinois
Oak Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States, adjacent to Chicago. It is the List of municipalities in Illinois, 26th-most populous municipality in Illinois, with a population of 54,318 as of the 2020 census. Oak Park was first settled in 1835 and later incorporated in 1902, when it separated from Cicero, Illinois, Cicero. The Pink Line is an rapid transit line in Chicago, run by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) as part of the Chicago "L" system. It is the CTA's newest rail line and began operation for a 180-day trial period on June 25, 2006, running between 54th/Cermak station in Cicero, Illinois and the Loop in downtown Chicago. As the line enters downtown Chicago, it begins to share tracks with Green Line trains on Lake Street. This connection is handled by the previously non-revenue Paulina Connector set of tracks. California is a station on the Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' system, serving the Pink Line and the Little Village neighborhood. The Loop (CTA)
The Loop (historically Union Loop) is the circuit of elevated rail that forms the hub of the Chicago "L" system in the United States. As of April 2024, the branch served 40,341 passengers on an average weekday. The Loop is so named because the elevated tracks loop around a rectangle formed by Lake Street (north side), Wabash Avenue (east), Van Buren Street (south), and Wells Street (west). The railway loop has given its name to Chicago's downtown, which is also known as Chicago Loop, the Loop. Transit began to appear in Chicago in the latter half of the 19th century as the city grew rapidly, and rapid transit started to be built in the late 1880s. Maywood is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States, in the Chicago metropolitan area. It was founded on April 6, 1869, and organized October 22, 1881. The population was 23,512 at the 2020 census. History There was limited European-American settlement in the Maywood area before a railroad was built after the American Civil War, which stimulated the rise of Chicago.
