2023–24 SDHL Season
The 2023–24 SDHL season was the seventeenth ice hockey season of the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL). The regular season began on 24 September 2023 and concluded on 20 February 2024. The playoffs began on 23 February and concluded on 19 March, with Luleå HF/MSSK claiming their seventh Swedish Championship title after a three-game sweep of MoDo Hockey in the finals. Teams No SDHL teams were relegated at the end of the 2022–23 SDHL season due to Göteborg HC's mid-season withdrawal from the league in November 2022. The nine teams that completed the 2022–23 season returned for the 2023–24 season and were joined by Frölunda HC, the Nationella Damhockeyligan (NDHL) champions of the 2023 . The promotion of Frölunda HC brought the number of teams participating in the league back to ten. Swedish Women's Hockey League
The Swedish Women's Hockey League (), abbreviated SDHL, is the elite league for women's ice hockey in Sweden. It was established in 2007 as the by the Swedish Ice Hockey Association and was renamed prior to the 2016–17 season. The league has ten teams and employs a system of promotion and relegation with the Nationella Damhockeyligan (NDHL). The unexpected withdrawal of Göteborg HC after playing only thirteen games of the 2022–23 season caused the number of teams to decrease to nine for the remainder of that season. Bodychecking was allowed for the 2022–23 season and goal cameras were introduced for the 2024–2025 season. Format When a game is tied after regulation, a sudden death overtime is played with only four skaters per team for maximum 10 minutes (or 20 minutes in the playoffs). Göteborg HC
Göteborg Hockey Club, abbreviated as Göteborg HC or GHC, are an ice hockey club in Angered, a borough of Gothenburg () in southwestern Sweden. They played in the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL), the top Swedish women's hockey league, during 2017 to November 2022. In early November 2022, the club withdrew from the SDHL. History Göteborg HC was founded in 2014 and its representative team earned promotion to the SDHL in 2017. The team finished the regular season in last place during each of the five seasons they completed in the SDHL but they managed to avoid relegation each time. The club earned its first win in the SDHL in November 2017, with a 4–2 victory over SDE Hockey. HV71
HV71 (), often referred to as just HV, is a Swedish professional ice hockey club based in Jönköping, playing in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), the first tier of Swedish ice hockey. The team played in the 2008–09 Champions Hockey League season, and has also participated in the new Champions Hockey League tournament since the 2014–15 season. Between 2008 and 2013, HV also participated in the European Trophy tournament. Sanni Hakala
Sanni Hakala (born 31 October 1997) is a Finnish retired ice hockey player and former member of the Finnish national team. She played more than seven seasons with HV71 in the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL) after beginning her career in the Finnish Naisten SM-sarja (renamed Naisten Liiga in 2017) with JYP Jyväskylä and Oulun Kärpät. In 2023, Hakala suffered a serious injury during a SDHL match that left her paralyzed from the chest down, ending her career at the age of 26. Petra Nieminen
Petra Nieminen (born 4 May 1999) is a Finnish ice hockey player for Luleå HF/MSSK of the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL) and alternate captain of Finland women's national ice hockey team. She is considered one of the top young talents in Finnish ice hockey. Playing career Nieminen's minor ice hockey career was played with the junior teams of Tappara in her hometown of Tampere. Hanna Olsson
Hanna Olsson (born 20 January 1999) is a Swedish ice hockey player and member of the Swedish national team, currently serving as captain of Frölunda HC in the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL). She is considered one of the best young Swedish players and was already the seventeenth all-time scorer in SDHL history at 21 years of age. Playing career Olsson played for the Skärgårdens SK boys' teams until she was 16. From 2013 to 2015, she split her time between the team and various Riksserien (renamed SDHL in 2016) teams. Michelle Karvinen
Michelle Karvinen (born 27 March 1990) is a Danish-Finnish ice hockey player for Frölunda HC Dam of the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL) and member of the Finnish national team. Karvinen has been described as "the world's best technical player" and she is considered one of the best currently active ice hockey forwards. With the Finnish national team, she has won three Olympic bronze medals and six IIHF Women's World Championship medals, five bronze and one silver. Captain (ice Hockey)
In ice hockey, the captain is the player designated by a team as the only person authorized to speak with the game officials regarding rule interpretations when the captain is on the ice. At most levels of play each team must designate one captain and a number of alternate captains (usually two or three) who speak to the officials when the captain is on the bench. Captains wear a "C" on their sweaters, while alternate captains wear an "A".
