2023–24 New York Islanders Season
The 2023–24 New York Islanders season was the 52nd season in the franchise's history. It was their third season in UBS Arena. On January 20, 2024, the Islanders, who had a 19–15–11 record and were out of playoff contention, fired head coach Lane Lambert, and replaced him with Patrick Roy. The Islanders participated in the 2024 NHL Stadium Series at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where they hosted the New York Rangers on February 18, losing the game 6–5 in overtime. On April 15, the Islanders clinched a playoff berth following a 4–1 win over the New Jersey Devils. The Islanders played against the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round for the second consecutive season and once again lost, this time in five games. The National Hockey League's Metropolitan Division (often referred to simply as the "Metro Division") was formed in 2013 as one of the two divisions in the Eastern Conference (NHL), Eastern Conference as part of a league realignment. Semyon Aleksandrovich Varlamov ( rus, links=y, Семён Александрович Варламов, , sʲɪˈmʲɵn vɐrˈlaməf; born 27 April 1988) is a Russian professional ice hockey goaltender for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL). He first played professionally with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the then Russian Superleague (RSL) after he was drafted in the first round, 23rd overall, by the Washington Capitals in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He would later spend eight NHL seasons with the Colorado Avalanche before signing with the Islanders in the summer of 2019. September 2023 New York Floods
On September 29, 2023, heavy rainfall led to flooding across portions of the New York metropolitan area and surrounding areas in the United States. The floods were caused by a low-pressure area that had absorbed the remnants of Tropical Storm Ophelia (2023), Tropical Storm Ophelia, which then stalled over the New York City area. Multiple rounds of heavy rainfall also moved through the region as a result of favorable precipitable water values, convective instability, and low-level winds. Ken Appleby
Ken Appleby (born April 10, 1995) is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender for the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL). He has previously played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders. Playing career On October 5, 2015, Appleby signed a three-year entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL). On January 20, 2018, Appleby made his NHL debut in a 3–1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, saving 24 shots when he replaced Keith Kinkaid. Appleby was sent back down to the AHL on February 4, 2018.
