2023 Ykkönen
The 2023 Ykkönen was the 52nd season of Ykkönen, the second highest football league in Finland. The season began on 14 April 2023 and ended on 7 October 2023. It was the final season of the Ykkönen serving as the second-tier football league in Finland, following its demotion to third-tier. Twelve teams contested the league. The champions ( EIF) and runners-up ( Gnistan) were promoted to the 2024 Veikkausliiga. The second, third, and fourth-placed teams (Gnistan, MP, and SJK Akatemia) qualified for the Veikkausliiga play-off. The bottom two teams ( JJK and KPV) were relegated to the 2024 Ykkönen. The sixth-placed team (HIFK) dissolved after the season finished due to bankruptcy, giving the tenth-placed team ( KäPa) a reprieve from relegation. The remaining teams were transferred to the 2024 Ykkösliiga. The 2024 Ykkönen will represent the new third-tier level season of Finnish football. ''Ykkönen'' (Finnish language, Finnish for 'Number One'; , previously I divisioona) is the third highest level of the Finnish football league system (after the Veikkausliiga and Ykkösliiga), managed by the Football Association of Finland. Until the end of 2023, ''Ykkönen'' was the second-highest level in Finland, but after the creation of new second-tier Ykkösliiga, it was dropped down one level in the league pyramid. History The first league format competition in the second level of Finnish football was called , which was founded in 1936. Before the inauguration of the , from 1930 to 1935, there had been special qualification matches for the right to play in the ''Mestaruussarja''. In the autumn of 1969, the Finnish football underwent a league system reform, and the was renamed ''II divisioona'', or Kakkonen, 2nd Division, with regional sections. Kotkan Työväen Palloilijat (abbreviated as KTP) is a Finnish association football, football club based in Kotka, and currently competing in Finland's top-tier, the Veikkausliiga. The club was founded in 1927 and its colours are green and white. Immediately after its formation the club joined the Finnish Workers' Sports Federation, to which it still belongs. KTP play its home matches at Arto Tolsa Areena. History KTP had a long football traditions centred on its golden age in the early 1950s when the club won two Finnish championships in 1951 and 1952. They also won the Finnish Cup four times, the most recent occasion being in 1980. The club, playing in the renamed Arto Tolsa Areena, were participating in the Veikkausliiga as recently as 2000, but were relegated to Ykkönen and finally went into bankruptcy. Fotbollsföreningen Jaro (''Jakobstads Rostfria''), commonly known simply as Jaro, is a Finnish professional football club based in the bilingual town of Jakobstad. The club currently plays in Veikkausliiga, the top tier in Finland. History Jaro was founded on December 18, 1965 by football enthusiasts working at Oy Jakobstads Rostfria Ab, which became the club’s first sponsor. Jaro rose through the Finnish football divisions, earning promotion to Finland’s top tier for the first time in 1988 by beating MyPa in a playoff game for direct promotion (3–2 on penalties). Järvenpään Palloseura (abbreviated JäPS) is a football club from Järvenpää, Finland. It was formed in 1947 and is based at the Järvenpää keskuskenttä. The club currently competes in Ykkösliiga, the new second-tier level of Finnish football. Background In six decades JäPS evolved from a small local team into one of Finland's largest football clubs, serving Järvenpää and the surrounding area. JäPS has around 1,000 members, 900 of whom are juniors who participate in the girls and boys teams.
