The 2023 XFL Championship Game was an American football game on May 13, 2023, at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The contest determined the champion of the 2023 XFL season and was played between the South Division title winners Arlington Renegades and the North Division title winners DC Defenders. The game began at 8:00 p.m. EDT and was aired on ABC. Background The game was the first championship game of the second stint of the XFL. In the first stint of the XFL, there was only one championship game held, the Million Dollar Game in 2001. The league folded shortly after the game was played. A championship game was scheduled for the end of the 2020 XFL season but was forbidden from taking place due to stay-at-home orders and gathering restrictions tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the premature end of the 2020 season after five weeks of play. 2023 Arlington Renegades Season
The 2023 Arlington Renegades season is the second season for the Arlington Renegades as a professional American football franchise. They are charter members of the XFL, one of eight teams to compete in the league for the 2023 season. The Renegades play their home games at the Choctaw Stadium and are led by head coach Bob Stoops. The Renegades had changed their franchise name from Dallas Renegades to Arlington Renegades prior to the 2023 season. Earning their first playoff berth, the Renegades eliminated the South Division regular season division champions Houston Roughnecks. With the win, the Renegades advance to the XFL Championship Game where they faced the DC Defenders, winning by a score of 35–26 to win their first ever XFL Championship. The Seattle Sea Dragons (formerly known as the Seattle Dragons) are a professional American football team based in Seattle, Washington. The team is a franchise of the new XFL and plays its home games at Lumen Field in Seattle. Originally founded by Vince McMahon's Alpha Entertainment, the franchise was acquired by Alpha Acquico, LLC, a consortium led by actor and former WWE star Dwayne Johnson and longtime business partner Dany Garcia, in August 2020 following Alpha Entertainment's bankruptcy sell-off of the league. They played as charter members of the XFL, one of eight teams to compete in the league for the 2023 season. The Roughnecks played their home games at the TDECU Stadium and were led by head coach Wade Phillips. Earning their first playoff berth and clinching first place in the South Division, the Roughnecks were eliminated by the Arlington Renegades in the South Division title game in the playoffs. This was the last season before the XFL merged with the United States Football League to form United Football League (UFL).
