2023 UCI BMX Freestyle World Championships
The 2023 UCI Urban Cycling World Championships, UCI BMX Freestyle World Championships were held in Glasgow, Scotland between 5 and 10 August 2023. Ordinarily held as part of the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships, in this year the world championships in the disciplines of Park and Flatland both form part of the larger 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, 2023 UCI World Cycling Championships. A 2023 UCI Trials World Championships, generally held with the BMX championships as the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships were held separately. The Freestyle park events were qualification events for the 2024 Summer Olympics. UCI Urban Cycling World Championships
The UCI Urban Cycling World Championships are the world championship events for freestyle BMX, cross-country eliminator, and Mountain bike trials, trials. They are organised by the Union Cycliste Internationale, Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the governing body of world cycling. History The first three finishers in each discipline are awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals. The winner of each discipline is also entitled to wear the rainbow jersey in events of that discipline until the following year's World Championships. The UCI Urban Cycling World Championships were held for the first time in 2017. The UCI World Championships in cross-country eliminator and trials were previously held as part of the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships. Daniel Dhers (born March 25, 1985, in Caracas, Venezuela) is a Venezuelan professional BMX rider. He is currently sponsored by Red Bull, POC, DC Shoes, Specialized, Albe's Mailorder, Sony and Verizon. Dhers lived in Greenville, North Carolina, known as Protown USA because of the concentration of BMX riders that live there, including Dave Mirra. Ernests Zēbolds (3 June 1999) is a Latvian cyclist who competes in Freestyle BMX. He competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Early life He started mountain biking at ten years-old, and started BMX the following year. Career In 2021, he had a fourth place finish in Moscow in the final of the European BMX Freestyle Championship. In 2022, he finished in fifth place at the 2022 European BMX Championships in Munich. In 2023, he won the Latvian national championships. That year, he finished in fourth place in the 2023 European Games. Jeffrey Whaley (born March 10, 1996) is a Canadian BMX cyclist in the freestyle discipline. Career In June 2024, Whaley was named to Canada's Olympic team. Whaley became the first BMX freestyle cyclist to compete for Canada at the Olympics. He finished 10th in the qualification round, missing out on advancing to the final by one spot. José "Chegüi" Torres (May 3, 1936 – January 19, 2009) was a Puerto Rican-born American professional boxer. As an amateur boxer, he won a silver medal in the junior middleweight division at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. In 1965, he defeated Willie Pastrano to win the WBC, WBA and lineal light heavyweight championships. Torres trained with the legendary boxing trainer Cus D'Amato. In 1997, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Amateur career Born in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico, Torres began boxing when he joined the United States Army as a teenager (he was 17 years old). Justin Dowell (born January 5, 2000) is an American freestyle BMX cyclist who has represented his nation at numerous global events including the Olympic Games, and won medals at multiple World Championships. From Virginia Beach, Dowell is known for a trick move called ''The Twix'' which is a mix of a tail whip and a bar at the same time. He won the freestyle park event at the 2018 UCI Urban Cycling World Championships. In 2019, he obtained a bronze medal at the Pan American Games.
