The 2023 Tokyo Marathon was the 16th edition of the annual marathon race in Tokyo, held on Sunday, . A Platinum Label marathon, it was the first of six annual World Marathon Majors events to be held in 2023, and the only one of the six that has not announced the inclusion of a non-binary division for the year. Chalu Deso Gelmisa (born ) is a long-distance runner from Ethiopia. He won the 2022 Paris Marathon and the 2023 Tokyo Marathon. Career In 2017, Deso took part in the Route du Vin Half Marathon in Luxembourg, finishing in twelfth place with a time of 1:08:06. In 2019, Deso placed second in the Castellón Marathon. He finished with a time of 2:13:12, nearly five minutes behind his compatriot Andualem Belay, who won the marathon. Eight months later, Deso won the 2019 Porto Marathon with a finish time of 2:09:08, nearly two minutes ahead of the second-place finisher. Rosemary Wanjiru
Rosemary Monica Wanjiru (born 9 December 1994) is a Kenyan professional female long-distance runner. She won the silver medal in the 5000 metres at the 2015 African Games, and represented her country at the 2019 World Athletics Championships, finishing fourth in the 10,000 metres. Wanjiru won the 2023 Tokyo Marathon and placed second at the 2022 Berlin Marathon. With her Tokyo mark, she sits sixth on the marathon world all-time list. She achieved the second-fastest ever women's marathon debut at the time at the 2022 Berlin Marathon. Marcel Eric Hug (born 16 January 1986) is a Paralympian athlete from Switzerland competing in category T54 wheelchair racing events. Hug, nicknamed 'The Silver Bullet', has competed in four Summer Paralympic Games for Switzerland, winning two bronze medals in his first Games in Athens in 2004. In 2010 he set four world records in four days, and at the 2011 World Championships he won a gold in the 10,000 metres and four silver medals, losing the gold in three events to long term rival David Weir. This rivalry continued into the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, where Hug won two silvers, in the 800m and the marathon. Manuela Schär
Manuela Schär (born 5 December 1984) is a Paralympian athlete from Switzerland competing mainly in category T54 sprint events. She has used a wheelchair since the age of 8, when a playground accident paralysed her from the waist down. Career Schär competed in the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece. There she won a silver medal in the women's 200 metres – T54 event, bronze in the women's 100 metres – T54 event and finished sixth in the women's 400 metres – T54 event. 2021 Tokyo Marathon
The 2021 Tokyo Marathon ( ja, 東京マラソン2021) was the fifteenth edition of the annual marathon race in Tokyo. The competition was held on Sunday 6 March 2022, having been postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The elite events were won by Kenyans Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei respectively, whilst the wheelchair races were won by Swiss athlete Marcel Hug and Japanese competitor Tsubasa Kina. Around 20,000 people competed in the mass participation event. Background In October 2020, the 2021 Tokyo Marathon was postponed from its usual date in March to October, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. World Athletics Label Road Races
World Athletics Label Road Races are races that the World Athletics (until 2019: ''IAAF'') designates as one of the "leading road races around the world." The classification was first introduced for the 2008 running season, upon the suggestion of the IAAF Road Running Commission. The races are split into three categories: marathons, half marathons and other. Within the "other" category are traditional road race distances, over which World Athletics world records can be set, along with some "Classical races", which span unusual distances.
