2023 SVB Eerste Divisie
The 2023 SVB Eerste Divisie was the 89th season of the SVB Eerste Divisie, the top division football competition in Suriname. The season had a delayed beginning, and began on 13 January 2023. It is scheduled to conclude on 30 July 2023. At the end of the season the new Suriname Major League was formed as the country's new top division. Robinhood won the league championship, successfully defending their title. It was Robinhood's first consecutive league championship since 1995, and their 26th overall Surinamese league title. SVB Eerste Divisie
The SVB Eerste Divisie is the second highest football championship for clubs run by the Surinaamse Voetbal Bond. The league currently comprises twelve teams and operates a system of promotion and relegation. Seasons run from November to June, with each team playing 30 games in the regular season. The league was previously known as the Hoofdklasse but was rebranded as the Topklasse for the 2016–17 season, before being renamed the Eerste Divisie starting in the 2017–18 season. In 2024, the SVB introduced a new professional competition, the Suriname Major League, with the Eerste Divisie now serving as the nation's top amateur competition. Giovanni Waal
Giovanni Waal (born May 25, 1989) is a Surinamese footballer who plays as a forward for Inter Moengotapoe in the Hoofdklasse, and for the Suriname national team. Career Waal began his career at SV Voorwaarts in Paramaribo, making his debut in the 2009-10 SVB Hoofdklasse season. After two season he transferred to SV Leo Victor, finishing the season as the league's joint top scorer together with Ulrich Reding (of SV Boskamp), both finishing with 20 goals each. Ronnie Brunswijk (; born 7 March 1961) is a Surinamese politician, businessman, former rebel leader, footballer and convicted drug trafficker, who is serving as the current Vice President of Suriname. Brunswijk served as the personal bodyguard of military dictator Dési Bouterse in the early 1980s, but was discharged after asking for a raise, and denied back pay. In 1985, he formed the Surinamese Liberation Army, better known as the Jungle Commando. André Kamperveen Stadium, formerly the National Stadion, is a multi-purpose stadium in Paramaribo, Suriname. Since its opening in 1953, the stadium has been the official home stadium of both football teams S.V. Transvaal and S.V. Robinhood and the official national stadium of the Suriname national football team. With an official capacity of 7,100, it is the largest stadium in Suriname.
