2023 Middlesbrough Council Election
The 2023 Middlesbrough Borough Council election took place on 4 May 2023 to elect all 46 members of Middlesbrough Council and the directly-elected Mayor of Middlesbrough. This was on the same day as other local elections across England. Prior to the election the council was under no overall control and the mayor was Andy Preston, an independent. The election saw Labour's candidate Chris Cooke win the mayoralty from Andy Preston, and the party also won a majority of the seats on the council. Middlesbrough Council
Middlesbrough Council, formerly Middlesbrough Borough Council, is the unitary authority covering the Borough of Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England. Following the 2023 local elections, Labour has held majority control of the council, which meets at the Town Hall. It is led by the directly-elected Mayor of Middlesbrough ( Chris Cooke since 2023). The council is a member of the Tees Valley Combined Authority. History The town of Middlesbrough had been incorporated as a municipal borough in 1853. When elected county councils were established in 1889 it was considered large enough to provide its own county-level services, and so it was made a county borough, independent from the new North Riding County Council, whilst remaining part of the North Riding of Yorkshire for ceremonial purposes. Andy Preston (politician)
Andy Preston (born 31 July 1966) is a British politician, charity chairman, and businessman. An independent, he served as the directly elected Mayor of Middlesbrough from 2019 until 2023. Charity work While working as a fund manager in London and New York, Preston was a patron of international children's charity ARK between 2002 and 2008. He also served as chairman of charity Fairbridge Teesside from 2005 to 2010. The first charity he founded was Middlesbrough and Teesside Philanthropic Foundation in 2011, which raises and distributes funds to boost communities across the urban area of Teesside. An early supporter and trustee of the charity was public relations executive Mark Bolland The Foundation is supported by a number of local businesses including Middlesbrough Football Club and Steve Gibson's Bulkhaul. Chris Cooke (politician)
Chris Cooke (born 1990) is a British Labour Party politician who has served as the directly elected Mayor of Middlesbrough leading Middlesbrough Council since May 2023. Early life Cooke was born in 1990 in Middlesbrough, Cleveland, England. He grew up in care. He was educated at St Peter's Secondary School, a Catholic school in South Bank, Redcar and Cleveland. After school, Cooke began an apprenticeship at Laurence Jackson School in Guisborough as an IT technician. He remained at the school after completing his apprenticeship. Some time after being elected a councillor in 2019, he left his IT job and became a community cohesion co-ordinator at Streets Ahead, a charitable help and advice centre in Middlesbrough.
