2023 Mid Ulster District Council Election
The 2023 election to Mid Ulster District Council was scheduled and held on 18 May 2023, alongside other local elections in Northern Ireland, two weeks after local elections in England. The Northern Ireland elections were delayed by 2 weeks to avoid overlapping with the coronation of King Charles III. They returned 40 members to the council via Single Transferable Vote. Michelle O'Neill ( Doris; born 10 January 1977) is an Irish politician who has been First Minister of Northern Ireland since February 2024 and Vice President of Sinn Féin since 2018. She has also been the MLA for Mid Ulster in the Northern Ireland Assembly since 2007. O'Neill was previously deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland from 2020 to 2022. O'Neill served on the Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council from 2005 to 2011. In 2007, she was elected to represent Mid Ulster in the Northern Ireland Assembly. She served as the first female Mayor of Dungannon and South Tyrone from 2010 to 2011. She has been serving as Vice President of Sinn Féin since 2018. In 2011, she was appointed to the Northern Ireland Executive by deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness as Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development. Ian Milne
Ian Milne (born 8 April 1954) is an Irish republican politician from Northern Ireland. Background Born in Bellaghy, County Londonderry on 8 April 1954, he attended the same school as also future-Provisional IRA members Thomas McElwee, and Francis Hughes. Milne joined the Official IRA-aligned faction of the Fianna Éireann militant youth organisation soon after its formation at the age of 16, but the following year moved to join the Provisional IRA. He was imprisoned in Crumlin Road Jail in 1971, after explosives went off in a car in which he was travelling. After serving 18 months, he escaped in January 1973 and continued his involvement in the Provisional IRA. The following year, he was arrested in the Republic of Ireland after stealing a Garda car, and in June 1974 he was sentenced to five years of penal servitude in Portlaoise Prison.
