The 2023 MTN 8 was the 49th edition of the South African soccer competition featuring the top 8-placed teams at the conclusion of the 2022–23 South African Premier Division, previous DStv Premiership season and the 16th under its current sponsored name. The competition started on 12 August 2023 and the final match was played on 7 October 2023. It was won by Orlando Pirates F.C., who defended their title. The 2023 season saw the unveiling of a new trophy. MTN 8
MTN 8 is the current branding for a South African soccer cup competition launched in 1972 for teams who finished in the top 8 positions of the league table of the country's preceding top-flight league (currently the DStv Premiership) season. The winners receive R 8 million and the competition's trophy, which is one of the three domestic trophies attainable by its competitors each soccer season, with the other two being the top-flight league title and the country's premier knock-out competition, the Nedbank Cup. Like the EFL Cup in England, the competition name bears its title title sponsor; from its launch until 2002, it was known as the '' BP Top 8'' and as the ''SAA Supa 8'' until 2008. Orlando Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Soweto, a suburb of Johannesburg, in Gauteng province in South Africa. It is the home venue for Orlando Pirates Football Club, a professional soccer team that plays in the Premier Soccer League. Orlando Stadium has hosted MTN 8 Cup Final and a Nedbank Cup Final. Today It is currently used mostly for football matches, as the home stadium of Orlando Pirates FC of the Premier Soccer League, and was intended to be utilized, as a training field, for teams participating in the 2010 FIFA World Cup after it was completely rebuilt and reopened on 22 November 2008. Chibuike Ohizu (born 18 September 1996) is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a forward for South African Premier Division club Sekhukhune United. Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo (born 28 May 1995) is a South African soccer player who plays as a midfielder for Orlando Pirates in the Premier Soccer League. Ndlondlo played for Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila and then for Marumo Gallants, the team which bought TTM's license. He made his first-tier debut in the 2020-21 South African Premier Division.
