The 2023 Chicago Red Stars season was the team's fifteenth as a professional women's soccer team, and tenth in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), the top tier of women's soccer in the United States. Background Team sale On October 3, 2022, the United States Soccer Federation published the Yates Report detailing the 2021 NWSL abuse scandal. The report detailed alleged abuses experienced by players from coaches and staff, and included reports of abusive behavior by former Red Stars head coach Rory Dames, who resigned in November 2021. Chicago Red Stars
The Chicago Red Stars are a professional women's soccer club based in Bridgeview, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. A founding member of the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) league, they have played in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) since 2013. WPS was the NWSL's predecessor as the professional women's soccer league in the United States, and the Red Stars played in the WPS in 2009 and 2010. After leaving the WPS in December 2010 due to the league's financial issues, the club joined the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) for the 2011 season. In 2012, the Red Stars co-founded and played in Women's Premier Soccer League Elite (WPSL-E): a one-year league which bridged the WPS and the NWSL. The ''Yates Report'', officially titled ''Report of the Independent Investigation to the U.S. Soccer Federation Concerning Allegations of Abusive Behavior and Sexual Misconduct in Women's Professional Soccer'', is the official report documenting the findings and conclusions concerning abusive behavior and sexual misconduct in women's professional soccer. The 173-page report was publicly released by the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) on October 3, 2022. It is named for Sally Yates, the lawyer who led the investigation, who is a former Acting United States Attorney General. Craig Harrington
Craig Neil Harrington (born 20 December 1982) is an English football manager who managed Club América in the Liga MX Femenil since June 2021. Between 2010 and 2013, Harrington worked as a coach at the LA Galaxy Academy. In December 2013, he was named the technical Director and head coach of the Turks and Caicos national football team. Career Harrington was put in charge of the Turks and Caicos national football team ahead of the 2014 Caribbean Cup qualification campaign. In 2018, Harrington became an assistant coach of Chicago Red Stars of the National Women's Soccer League. On 7 February 2020 Harrington was named the head coach of Utah Royals FC in the National Women's Soccer League. Michelle Lynn Lomnicki (; born May 3, 1987) is an American former professional soccer player who played as a defender. Early life Born in Aurora, Colorado, to parents Pat and Sherri Wenino, Michelle attended Smoky Hill High School and played all four seasons for the girls soccer team. A four-sport, and 15-time letterwinner, she received the school's Athlete of the Year with Honors award in 2005. Wenino was a Tulsa All-Tournament team member in 2004 and received the Fair Play Award in 2000 State Cup play. She was first-team Centennial league as a senior and second-team as a junior and was named MVP for Smoky Hill as a senior. In 2003, the team were the 2003 Centennial League Champions. Ella Copple Masar (formerly Ella Masar McLeod; born April 3, 1986) is an American-Canadian former professional soccer player who is currently an assistant coach for the Chicago Red Stars in the National Women's Soccer League. She previously played for FC Rosengård, Houston Dash, Chicago Red Stars, Paris Saint-Germain, magicJack, and VfL Wolfsburg. She made one appearance for the United States women's national soccer team in 2009. The Washington Spirit is an American professional soccer club based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area that participates in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL).
