2023 Bamba Attack
On October 1, 2023, rebels from the CSP-PSD attacked Malian forces in Bamba, Gao Region, Bamba, Gao Region, Mali. Background Since the start of 2023, tensions had intensified between the Malian junta that took power in 2021 and the allied Wagner Group mercenaries against the Permanent Strategic Framework for Peace, Security, and Development (CSP-PSD), a coalition of the former rebel Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA) and the pro-government Platform (Mali), Platform militias. Malian and Wagner forces attacked the town of Ber, Mali, Ber in August 2023, the first major clashes between the two groups since the signing of the Algiers Accords (2015), Algiers Accords in 2015. CSP-PSD spokesmen denounced the attack, and stated that retaliation would occur. The CSP-PSD then declared war on the Malian junta, and attacked Malian forces in Bourem, Léré, Mali, Léré, and Dioura. Bamba, Gao Region
Bamba is a small town and rural commune in the Bourem Cercle of the Gao Region of Mali. The town is located on the left (north) bank of the Niger River, 190 km east of Timbuktu and 230 km northwest of the town of Gao. In the 2009 census the commune had a population of 28,524. The commune of Bamba includes 19 villages and 7 nomadic population groups. The population are primarily Songhais but also Tuaregs and Bozos. Ted Joans wrote a poem to "Le fou de Bamba" (The madman of Bamba). On 6 April 2020, at least 20 soldiers were killed in an attack on a military base.
