2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season
The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season was the fourth-most active Atlantic hurricane season on record with 20 tropical cyclone naming, named storms forming, tied with 1933 Atlantic hurricane season, 1933. Among them, 7 became hurricanes, with 3 reaching major hurricane strength. The season also had an abovenormal accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) rating of 139, despite the presence of the 2023–24 El Niño event, which typically results in less activity, and had the most storms for an El Niño year on record, largely due to record-warm sea surface temperatures across the Atlantic. The season officially began on June 1 and ended on November 30. Hurricane Alex (2016)
Hurricane Alex was the first Atlantic hurricane to occur in January since Hurricane Alice of 1954–55. Alex originated as a non-tropical low near the Bahamas on January 7, 2016. Initially traveling northeast, the system passed by Bermuda on January8 before turning southeast and deepening. It briefly acquired hurricane-force winds by January 10, then weakened slightly before curving towards the east and later northeast. Acquiring more tropical weather characteristics over time, the system transitioned into a subtropical cyclone well south of the Azores on January 12, becoming the first North Atlantic tropical or subtropical cyclone in January since Tropical Storm Zeta of 2005–2006. Hurricane Franklin (2023)
Hurricane Franklin was a long-lived, erratic, and powerful tropical cyclone that brought tropical-storm force winds to parts of the Greater Antilles and Bermuda. The sixth Tropical cyclone naming, named storm, second hurricane and first major hurricane of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, Franklin impacted Hispaniola as a tropical storm before strengthening into a high-end Category 4 hurricane several days later. Possessing a large wind field, the hurricane produced tropical storm force winds over Bermuda and soon became extratropical cyclone, extratropical as it accelerated into the open northern Atlantic Ocean. Tropical Storm Harold was a moderate tropical storm that made landfall in South Texas in August 2023. The eighth named storm of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, Harold developed from a tropical wave that entered the Gulf of Mexico on August 20, after passing through the Bahamas and South Florida. Landfall is the event of a storm moving over land after being over water. More broadly, and in relation to human travel, it refers to 'the first land that is reached or seen at the end of a journey across the sea or through the air, or the fact of arriving there.' Tropical Storm Bret (2023)
Tropical Storm Bret was a strong tropical storm that brought gusty conditions and impacts to the Windward Islands and parts of Northern South America. The second named storm of the very active 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, Bret developed from a tropical wave that moved away from the coast of West Africa and formed east of Barbados on June 19. Slow development occurred and the system intensified into a tropical storm. Bret continued to drift west and passed directly over Saint Vincent as it continued to move into the Caribbean. As it entered the Windward Islands, hurricane hunters found that Bret had sustained winds of 70 mph (110 km/h) and a central pressure of 996 mbar (29.4 inHg).
