2022–23 Maltese FA Trophy
The 2022–23 Maltese FA Trophy, officially named IZIBET FA Trophy due to sponsorship reasons, is the 85th edition of the football cup competition, the FA Trophy. The winners of the Maltese FA Trophy will earn a place in the first qualifying round of the 2023–24 UEFA Europa Conference League. The first round of games started on 15 November 2022. Floriana were the defending champions. But were eliminated in the Round of 32 by Santa Lucia. Preliminary round Twelve preliminary round matches played on 15–22 November 2022. The draw for the preliminary round was held on 26 October 2022. Round of 32 Sixteen Matches were played on 13–15 January. The draw for the Round of 32 and Round of 16 was held on 4 January 2023. Floriana ( or ''Il-Floriana''), also known by its title Borgo Vilhena, is a fortified town in the Port Region area of Malta, just outside the capital city Valletta. It has a population of 2,205 as of March 2014. Floriana is the birthplace of many famous Maltese, amongst which the composer of the national anthem, ' L-Innu Malti', Robert Samut; former Bishop of Malta Dun Mauro Caruana, the poets Oliver Friggieri and Maria Grech Ganado, the writer and politician Herbert Ganado and Swedish Idol winner Kevin Borg. Etymology Floriana is named after Pietro Paolo Floriani, an Italian military engineer who designed the Floriana Lines, the line of fortifications surrounding the town. Hamrun ( ) is a town in the Southern Region, Malta, Southern Region of Malta, with a population of 9,244 as of March 2014. The people The townspeople are traditionally known as ''Tas-Sikkina'' (literally meaning 'of the knife' or 'those who carry a knife') or as ''Ta' Werwer'' (which literally means 'those who scare' or more colloquially, 'the scary ones'). This appellation could stem from the fact that a considerable number of used to work as stevedores on the docks and thus carried a knife at all times. Another theory was that the community of Sicilians who settled here illegally in the 16th century danced a traditional dance which involved the wielding of small stilettos which they carried in their socks, waving them in the air and back to their sheaths. The Kerċem Ajax Stadium () is a stadium located in Kerċem, Gozo, Malta. The stadium is believed to seat around 1,000 people and hosts the Gozo Football League Second Division and domestic cup matches. Background and description The stadium was inaugurated on 3 October 2014 and was part of an estimated €6 million investment made by the Malta Football Association with the help of the Government in completing ten infrastructural projects in Malta. Birgu ( , ), also known by its title Città Vittoriosa ('Victorious City'), is an old fortified city on the south side of the Grand Harbour in the Port Region of Malta. The city occupies a promontory of land with Fort Saint Angelo at its head and the city of Cospicua at its base. Nadur () is an administrative unit of Malta, located in the eastern part of the island of Gozo. Nadur is built on a plateau and is one of the largest localities in Gozo. Known as the 'second city', it spreads along a high ridge to the east of Victoria. It had a population of 4,509 as of March 2014. The word is derived from the Arabic word ‘nadara’, which means 'lookout', pretty much having the same meaning as its motto ‘Vigilant’. Fgura (, ) is a town in the Port Region of Malta. It has a population of 13,066 as of 2021. Its northern fringes are bordered by the Cottonera Lines of fortifications while it merges with the towns of Żabbar to the east and Paola and Tarxien to the West. Kalkara F
Kalkara () is a village in the Port Region, Malta, Port Region of Malta, with a population of 3,014 as of March 2014. The name is derived from the Latin word for Lime (material), lime (Calce), and it is believed that there was a lime kiln present there since Roman times. Kalkara forms part of the inner harbour area and occupies the area around Kalkara Creek. The town has its own Local Council and is bordered by the cities of Birgu and Żabbar, as well as the town of Xgħajra. History The village of Kalkara developed as a small fishing community around the sheltered inlet of Kalkara Creek. Some historians believe that the land that today is known as Kalkara, was one of the first to be inhabited by the initial dwellers of Malta that came from nearby island of Sicily.
