2022 Texas Senate Election
The 2022 Texas Senate elections were held on November 8, 2022. Under the provisions of the Constitution of Texas, all 31 senate districts across the state of Texas were up for re-election, as the election was the first after the decennial United States Census. Numerous other federal, state, and local elections were also held on this date. The winners of this election served in the 88th Texas Legislature, with seats apportioned among the 2020 United States census. Republicans had held a majority in the Texas Senate since January 14, 1997, as a result of the 1996 elections. Texas Senate
The Texas Senate is the upper house of the Texas Legislature, with the Texas House of Representatives functioning as the lower house. Together, they form the State legislature (United States), state legislature of the state of Texas. The Senate is made up of 31 members, where each represents a single-member districts across the U.S. state of Texas, with populations of approximately 940,000 per constituency, based on the 2020 United States census, 2020 U.S. Census. Jane Nelson
Jane Gray Nelson (born October 5, 1951) is an American businesswoman and former school teacher who serves as the Secretary of State of Texas since 2023. She was a Texas state senator who represented Texas Senate, District 12, Texas Senate District 12. She was elected to the Senate in 1992 after serving two two-year terms (1988–1992) on the Texas State Board of Education. In 2023, Governor Greg Abbott appointed Nelson to succeed John B. Larry Joseph Sabato (; born August 7, 1952) is an American political scientist and political analyst. He is the Robert Kent Gooch Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia, where he is also the founder and director of the Center for Politics, which works to promote civic engagement and participation. Beverly Powell
Beverly Powell (born September 18, 1951), is an American politician from the state of Texas. A Democrat, she represented District 10 in the Texas Senate from 2019 to 2023. In 2018, Powell defeated incumbent Republican Senator Konni Burton by a margin of 3.4%. In 2021, during redistricting, Texas Republicans redrew District 10 to be whiter and more conservative than it was before. The old district had been located entirely in Tarrant County, and voted for Joe Biden by eight points. The new district stretches into portions of six nearby counties and would have given Donald Trump a 16-point margin had it existed in 2020. Powell concluded the new district was "unwinnable" for a Democrat, and she decided to give up her bid for re-election and urged her supporters to work on "efforts to advance our causes and on the continuing efforts to restore voting rights" instead. Kelton Gray Seliger (born June 16, 1953) is an American politician who represented the 31st district in the Texas Senate from 2004 to 2023. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the 30th mayor of Amarillo from 1993 to 2001 and as president pro tempore of the Texas Senate in 2017.
