2022 San Francisco Board Of Education Recall Elections
The 2022 San Francisco Board of Education recall elections (also called the San Francisco school board recall elections) were held on February 15, 2022. In a landslide election, over two-thirds of voters chose to remove three San Francisco Board of Education (School Board) Commissioners—Alison Collins, Board President Gabriela Lopez, and Faauuga Moliga—from office. All three commissioners were replaced by appointees chosen by Mayor London Breed. The other four members of the school board were not eligible for recall at this time. The recall election was the first in San Francisco since 1983 San Francisco mayoral recall election, the failed recall election of then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein in 1983, the first successful recall since the ouster of State Senator Edwin Grant in 1914, and the first ever attempt to remove members of the School Board. San Francisco Board Of Education
The San Francisco Board of Education is the school board for the San Francisco, City and County of San Francisco. It is composed of seven Commissioners, elected by voters across the city to serve 4-year terms. It is subject to local, and state law, and federal laws since the district receives federal funding. San Francisco Unified School District
San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), established in 1851, is the only public school district within the City and County of San Francisco, and the first in the state of California. Under the management of the San Francisco Board of Education, the district serves approximately 50,046 students across 122 schools. SFUSD utilizes an intra-district school choice system and requires students and parents to submit a selection application. Every year in the fall, the SFUSD hosts a Public School Enrollment Fair to provide families access to information about all the schools in the district. This system is set to change as the school board has resolved to overhaul the system to ensure that more students (at least at the elementary level) are placed at neighborhood schools. Rafael Mandelman
Rafael Mandelman (born October 17, 1973) is an American attorney and politician currently serving as the president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, representing District 8. Early life Mandelman grew up in Laguna Beach, California with his mother. His parents divorced when he was three. His mother had various mental disorders and was regularly in and out of the hospital. At 11 years old, his relatives convinced Mandelman to move to San Francisco, where his paternal grandmother was. But she was too old to take care of him so he lived between homes. John Burton (American Politician)
John Lowell Burton (born December 15, 1932) is an American politician who served in both the California State Assembly and the United States House of Representatives. He was a member of the Democratic Party and represented California's 5th and 6th congressional districts. Burton served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1974 to 1983, during which time he was a strong advocate for civil rights, Environmentalism, environmental protection, and healthcare reform. Fiona Ma (born March 4, 1966) is an American politician and accountant. She has been serving as the California state treasurer since January 7, 2019. She previously was a member of the California Board of Equalization (2015–2019), the California State Assembly (2006–2012), and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (2002–2006).
