2022 Pietermaritzburg Shooting
On 9 July 2022, a mass shooting occurred at the Samukelisiwe tavern at Sweetwaters in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The shooting left four people dead and eight others injured. Shooting At about 8:30 pm, two men entered Sweetwaters tavern in Pietermaritzburg, where they shot 12 patrons at random with a 9mm pistol. Two people died at the scene, and two more died in the hospital. The deceased were between the ages of 30 and 45. Eight others were injured during the attack. There was no conversation or fight that led to the shooting, and no one was robbed. The gunmen fled in a Volkswagen Polo. On the same day, 15 people were killed in a mass shooting at a tavern in Soweto. However, police do not believe these shootings are linked. A mass shooting has various definitions, but is defined by South African police as an incident in which three or more people are shot with a firearm. Mass shootings in South Africa are mostly perpetrated by gangs, and are usually motivated by competition for turf and resources, as well as illegal mining. Another cause are the long-standing conflicts between minibus taxi associations in the country. They often result in revenge shootings. Taverns are often targeted. On the early morning hours of 26 June 2022, 21 people died during celebrations at the Enyobeni Tavern, a shebeen in East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Four more people were injured. No official causes of death have been publicly released. Background The Enyobeni Tavern is a two-storey building located in Scenery Park, East London, Eastern Cape, amidst densely populated residences. The building had received complaints from local residents due to its late opening hours and the noise from the building.
