2022 Philadelphia Union Season
The 2022 Philadelphia Union season was the club's thirteenth season in Major League Soccer, the top flight of American soccer. The team is managed by Jim Curtin, his ninth season with the club. The club's regular season began on February 26, 2022, and concluded on October 9. Outside of MLS, the Union also competed in the 2022 U.S. Open Cup, entering in the Round of 32. The club finished second in the Supporters' Shield standings and first in the Eastern Conference (MLS), Eastern Conference. Founded on February 28, 2008, the club began playing in 2010 as an expansion team. The 2021 CONCACAF Champions League (officially the 2021 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League for sponsorship reasons) was the 13th edition of the CONCACAF Champions League under its current name, and overall the 56th edition of the premier football club competition organized by CONCACAF, the regional governing body of North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. The Designated Player Rule, nicknamed the Beckham Rule, allows Major League Soccer franchises to sign up to three players that would be considered outside their salary cap (either by offering the player higher wages or by paying a transfer fee for the player). Ryan Richter (born April 12, 1989) is an American soccer former player and current assistant coach for Philadelphia Union in MLS. Youth and college Richter played soccer at William Tennent High School in Warminster, Pennsylvania where he was a three-year starter. He was elected as team captain and MVP for both his Junior and Senior years. At William Tennent, Richter attained honor roll status for all four years, he was also a three-year starter on the basketball team as well as being a placekicker on the football team. Pat Noonan (born August 2, 1980) is an American soccer coach and former soccer player. He is the head coach of FC Cincinnati in Major League Soccer. Playing career College and amateur Noonan attended De Smet Jesuit High School, and played college soccer for the Indiana University Hoosiers from 1999 to 2002. He was named an NSCAA first-team All-American his senior and junior seasons, and second-team All-American his sophomore year.
