Capital punishment was a legal penalty in Zambia until 2022. Despite its former legality, the country had not carried out any execution since 1997. Zambia was considered " Abolitionist in Practice". There were at least 9 new death sentences in Zambia in 2021. 257 people were on death row at the end of 2021. On 25 May 2022, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema announced that the death penalty would soon be abolished in Zambia. On 23 December 2022, capital punishment was officially abolished, though it remains in some military statutes. The COSAFA Cup (known fully as COSAFA Senior Challenge Cup) is an annual tournament for teams from Southern Africa organized by Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA), inaugurated after the ban against the Republic of South Africa had been lifted and the African Cup of Nations had been staged there in 1996. Zambia National Football Team
The Zambia national football team represents Zambia in association football and is governed by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ). Alexander Chikwanda
Alexander Bwalya Chikwanda (24 December 1938 – 3 May 2022) was a Zambian politician. He was a member of the National Assembly during the 1960s and again in the 2010s, also serving as Minister of Finance from 1973 to 1976 and again from October 2011 to September 2016. Biography He studied economics at Lund University in Sweden. In the 1964 general elections he was elected to the Legislative Council in the Kitwe North constituency, but later gave up his seat so that it could be contested by Andrew Mutemba. Rupiah Banda
Rupiah Bwezani Banda (19 February 1937 – 11 March 2022) was a Zambian politician who served as the fourth president of Zambia from 2008 to 2011, taking over from Levy Mwanawasa. Banda was an active participant in politics from early in the presidency of Kenneth Kaunda, during which time he held several diplomatic posts. In October 2006, he was appointed the vice-president by Mwanawasa. After Mwanawasa suffered a stroke in June 2008 and died later that year, he became acting president. During the 2008 Zambian presidential election, 2008 elections, he narrowly won against opposition leader Michael Sata of the Patriotic Front (Zambia), Patriotic Front.
