2021 Special Honours (New Zealand)
The 2021 Special Honours in New Zealand were two Special Honours List, published in New Zealand on 9 August and 28 September 2021. Crown Honours Lists
Crown Honours Lists are lists of honours conferred upon citizens of the Commonwealth realms. The awards are presented by or in the name of the reigning monarch, currently King Charles III, or his vice-regal representative. New Year Honours Honours have been awarded at New Year since at least 1890, in which year a list of Queen Victoria's awards was published in ''The London Gazette'' on 2 January. There was no honours list at New Year 1902, as a list had been published on the new King's birthday the previous November, but from January 1903 until 1909 a list (including only Indian orders) was published. The other orders were announced on the King's birthday in November. Australia has discontinued New Year Honours, and now announces its honours on Australia Day, 26 January, and the King's Official Birthday holiday, in early June. New Zealand Order Of Merit
The New Zealand Order of Merit is an order of merit in the New Zealand royal honours system. It was established by royal warrant (document), royal warrant on 30 May 1996 by Elizabeth II, Monarchy of New Zealand, Queen of New Zealand, "for those persons who in any field of endeavour, have rendered meritorious service to the Crown and nation or who have become distinguished by their eminence, talents, contributions or other merits", to recognise outstanding service to the Crown and people of New Zealand in a civil or military capacity. In the order of precedence, the New Zealand Order of Merit ranks immediately after the Order of New Zealand. Queen's Service Order
The Queen's Service Order, established by royal warrant (document), royal warrant of Queen regnant, Queen Elizabeth II on 13 March 1975, is used to recognise "valuable voluntary service to the community or meritorious and faithful services to the Crown or similar services within the public sector, whether in elected or appointed office". This order was created after a review of Orders, decorations, and medals of New Zealand, New Zealand's honours system in 1974. Cindy Kiro
Dame Alcyion Cynthia Kiro (; Simpson; born 1958) is a New Zealand public health academic, administrator, and advocate, who has served as the 22nd governor-general of New Zealand since 21 October 2021. Kiro is the first Māori woman, the third person of Māori descent, and the fourth woman to hold the office. Before she was announced as governor-general designate, Kiro was Ahorangi chief executive of the Royal Society Te Apārangi and was previously the Children's Commissioner, head of school of the School of Public Health at Massey University, head of Te Kura Māori at Victoria University of Wellington and Pro-Vice Chancellor (Māori) of the University of Auckland. David Gascoigne
Sir David Rendel Kingston Gascoigne (born 15 January 1940) is a New Zealand lawyer and former judicial conduct commissioner. He is the husband of Dame Patsy Reddy, who served as the 21st governor-general of New Zealand from 2016 to 2021. Early life and education Gascoigne was born on 15 January 1940 in the Wairau Valley of New Zealand's South Island, the son of Keith and Dorothy Gascoigne. The family moved to Blenheim where he received most of his schooling, including at Marlborough College where he was dux. Gascoigne completed tertiary study at Victoria University of Wellington, graduating with a Master of Laws degree in 1964.
