2021 Sam Houston Bearkats Football Team
The 2021 Sam Houston Bearkats football team represented Sam Houston State University in the 2021 NCAA Division I FCS football season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. The Bearkats were led by eighth-year head coach K. C. Keeler and played their home games at Bowers Stadium. The Western Athletic Conference and ASUN Conference announced the formation of the WAC–ASUN Challenge (AQ7) for the 2021 season on February 23, 2021. Ryan Carty (born August 9, 1983) is an American college football coach. He is the head football coach at the University of Delaware, a position he had held since the 2022 season. Playing career Raised in Somerville, New Jersey, Carty played high school football at Somerville High School. Carty played as a quarterback at Delaware from 2002 to 2006. He was a backup quarterback for the entirety of his career, including when Delaware won the NCAA Division I-AA national championship in 2003. Matt Merkens is an American football coach who is the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Sam Houston State Bearkats football team. Playing career Merkens grew up in Marble Falls, Texas and attended Marble Falls High School. After high school, he enrolled at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) and joined the Bearkats football team as a walk-on. Merkens was a backup quarterback for the Bearkats for three seasons. Coaching career Merkens began his coaching career as a student coaching intern at Sam Houston State for his final two seasons at the school. After graduating in 2015, he was hired as a graduate assistant at Western Colorado. Merkens returned to Sam Houston State as an offensive assistant after one season and worked primarily with wide receivers before being promoted to an offensive quality control position in 2018. Memorial Stadium is a stadium in Stephenville, Texas. It is primarily used for American football, and is the home field of the Tarleton State University Texans football team.
