2021 Rasht Earthquake
On July 10 2021, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck 20 km southeast of the Rasht Valley in Tajikistan. Tectonic setting Tajikistan lies within the complex zone of collision between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. The dominant structures in this area are a combination of thrust faults and sinistral (left lateral) strike-slip faults. Earthquake The earthquake occurred at 07:14 am local time on July 10, 2021, and was located northwest of the capital Dushanbe. It was followed by 20 aftershocks. The earthquake struck at the 72nd anniversary of the 1949 Khait earthquake. Impact Five people were killed. The victims were a 70-year old mother and four children between the ages of 6 and 12 who died in Tajikabad District. 30 people were also injured, and 5,560 people were displaced. Hundreds of homes were damaged or destroyed, including 300 in Langarisho jamoat, seven in Hijborak, and 12 in Ashkalon. 1989 Gissar Earthquake
The 1989 Gissar earthquake occurred at 23:02 UTC on 22 January near Gissar in Tajikistan. The shock had a body wave magnitude of 5.3 and a maximum felt intensity of VII (''Very strong'') on the Mercalli intensity scale. The National Geophysical Data Center reported that the death toll from the event amounted to about 274, and the National Earthquake Information Center stated there were many injured. Nearly all the casualties were caused by mudslides which buried Sharora and two nearby villages. The earthquake was the deadliest in 1989. On December 7, 2015, an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the moment magnitude scale struck Tajikistan west of Murghab at 07:50 UTC at a depth of . The earthquake was also felt in neighboring Xinjiang in China, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan. The earthquake was felt with intensities of MMI IV in Islamabad, Pakistan, MMI IV in New Delhi, India, MMI IV in Kashgar, China, MMI II in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, MMI II in Kabul, Afghanistan, MMI III in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, MMI III in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and MMI II in Almaty, Kazakhstan. A truck driver and a policeman were killed while dozens more were injured and 500 homes destroyed. Kashmir () is the northernmost geographical region of the Indian subcontinent.
